Carthage ruled over a vast trading empire across the western Mediterranean and the coasts of Sardinia, Corsica, northern Africa, and western Sicily. By the third century B.C. Carthage was the biggest and largest power that was ruling the trade of the western Mediterranean. The Romans were scared of the Carthaginians because they lived on the island of Sicily which is on the coast of Italy.
