Being different can attract positive and negative attention form your peers. Growing up as an emo kid who wore dark clothes and  listened to different music, some kids gave weird looks and said nasty things. School staff should pay more attention to how kids interact with each other, because some students are too scared to reach out. Bullying is further manifested in classrooms by teachers who only tell students to "settle down" and do not follow up with active punishment. When I was in elementary school, there was a girl who would constantly have to ask for school supplies from the school because her parents didn’t have enough money to buy her supplies. Additionally, her uniform would fit her small. This was probably due because she would reuse her uniforms from the previous year. Another example of this is if the district is small, it might not have enough money to provide as much as other districts. For example, in my elementary school there were no busses, so some students would have to walk up to 10 miles to get to school. This made it difficult when it would rain or when it was cold. This presented a  challenge to those students  due to the district not providing school busses. Another social challenge I have seen manifested in the classroom has been bullying. When I was in band in high school, it was a very toxic environment being in the top group. A lot of the members that were in leadership or in the top group thought that they were the best and would make fun of the members who weren’t in the top group. This references teachers having to pace themselves in order for the students to be able to understand. It represents teaching diversity by showing that teachers need to adapt to students of different english language levels. This is done in order to ensure that the students learn the necessary knowledge and skills being taught. In Laredo, this could be presented when there are students in the classroom who only speak spanish. This shows that the teacher has to embrace their student not being able to speak english and try to accommodate their lesson plan so the child can be able to learn.

This is especially important in history because by falsely depicting a certain group of people, we end up undermining the actions of other groups. For example, when we look at the history of the founding of our country, the history books tend to only highlight the efforts of the colonies to expand and do all these great things to get freedom. Unfortunately, it doesn’t show that negative side about how they were able to accomplish it. It doesn’t emphasize that although they were able to retrieve their freedom, it cost them taking the Native Americans’ land and massacring a big chunk of them. There should be more inclusion of the other point of view. In this case, it would be the Native Americans point of view to get rid of the biased perception being taught in schools.

Many students who have privileged backgrounds do not know what it took for that student to come to school that day. Some students may have walked miles in bad weather, some didn't have breakfast, and some didn't have their parents wishing them a good day. When you are approached with situations such as this the best way to handle this is to shut it down before it goes any further. The article mentions that EL's share characteristics with student who have learning disabilities. Also, schools are always looking for EL teachers when there is little knowledge of language acquisition and disability. They also mention that the measurement tools used for determining ability and eligibility for special education. This would end up placing EL students in a special education program by accident rather than the EL program. We agree with this idea. Through different personal experiences, we had some friends and family be held back a year because of an assessment or placed in programs that they weren't supposed to be in. We agreed with that the assessments are inaccurate. We also agreed that EL students so share learning characteristics with students who have a learning or language disability. Thinking about bullying as something every kid will experience normalizes actions and behaviors. This makes the effects of bullying even more dangerous for bullied kids and bullies themselves. Growing up, I think I was oblivious to how many of my peers were involved in illegal drug use or alcohol consumption. This specific teacher had a full class of about 30 or so students, and the lesson was not being grasped by anyone. And when asked to slow down the lesson or take a bit longer to reteach the lesson he got upset blamed the class for not being able to understand the lesson and moved on. Maybe from his perspective we were not paying attention or being difficult, but when more than 10 students have to ask the same question, there is a problem.
