It often falls under the issue of stereotypes that have been accumulated over a long period of time on race and gender. Who a person is or what her/his identity is is often (most of the time!) personal and unique to her/himself. Therefore, if it ever, ever!, falls out of line of the preexisting stereotypes/social norms/gender roles, they are hard to be accepted by society.

We have to understand that all these preexisting limitations that define a person is changeable and is still changing. Everyone is different. We need to encourage people to speak out and break these "norms".
