"Sit down! Talk to me! Tell me something!"
Stephen's dad seem very eager (the exclamation mark shows this) to find out about what goes on in his son's life. Especially because they are not very close in 'The Close'.(their village)

"Setting eyes on me after so long"
They don't see each other a whole lot because he is either out of the house or Stephen's dad is at work.

"On and on he goes"
He is tired and impatient from his father as he feels almost interrogated by his father from asking so many questions.

"even my father's home to cap it all"
Stephen feels that its already bad that he is staying indoors and his mother is shouting at him, so his father being their is making it worst.

"i want to know [...] why my father has never killed any Germans"
shows how he doesn't really know what his father does and also he finds his father (in a way) lame, and would like him to be a little interesting like, Keith's mother.

"I sit down reluctantly"- Reluctant means to unwillingly or hesitantly do something. This shows that Stephen doesn't want to sit with his father and talk possibly because they don't have a close relationship or Stephen thinks that there are much more important tasks at hand than sitting with his father and talking about school.

"indeed even my father's home"- Father is a very formal term to address your parent. This further suggests a distant relationship between Stephen and his father. Even implies that this is a rarely occurring event. However, the tone indicates that Stephen is not excited about it.

"I say impatiently"- Impatiently suggests a sense of annoyance and irritation from Stephen's side. He's eager for the conversation to end, so he can leave to avoid further discussion with his father. This implies a slight awkwardness amongst the two.

"Stephen! Well, well, well! Sit down! Talk to me! Tell me something!" - The quote shows that Mr Wheatley is excited to talk to his younger son. This indicates that he cares for Stephen and wants to spend time with him in contrary to Stephen's opinion on his father. The exclamation marks further shows Mr Wheatley's excitement.

"Why my father has never killed a German" - Doesn't see his father as heroic as other men who have gone to war, therefore doesn't look up to him/see him as a role model like in most father son relationships

"Someone at school did they call you at? Someone at school?" - Stephen's Father is very inquisitive towards Stephen's school life. He continues to question Stephen when he acts suspicious.

Stephen refers to his Dad as "father" indicating formality as he rarely see's him, this is further backed up when his mother says "Daddy's home he never see's you". The italics add emphasis as to how Stephen's father is usually absent.

(Short/undetailed answers to his fathers questions) - this shows the relationship between Stephen and his father isn't a loving one, as he answers his question reluctantly with short unspecific answers and holds back telling him his actual school life

- Beginning to wake at the sound of argument
the words beginning to wake suggest that Stephen’s father makes his first appearance
this is the first time the reader experiences Stephen’s father in action

- I sit down reluctantly
the word “reluctantly” shows that he doesn’t want to sit down but is being forced to
this shows the awkward relationship between Stephen and his father as he doesn’t want to upset his father

- “Stephen! Well, well, well! Sit down! Tell me something!”
The exclamation marks highlight his father’s excitement and interest in having a conversation with him

- tell you what?
his question shows how uninterested he is in the conversation
since if he was interested the question would be unnecessary

- what can I say?
rhetorical question
shows that he has a lot to say but he wouldn’t share it with his father because he doesn’t want to let him down

- my father wants to know everything about my life, now that he’s got started.
the way he describes his father’s interest to know more about his life and Stephen’s negative tone makes it seem like he doesn’t want a relationship with his father
this could be because he is too busy thinking of Keith’s mother or because he does’t want to disappoint his father
