The economy during the gilded age was in a period of rapid growth. This doesn’t mean everything was good for everyone financially though. Owners of large businesses were more happy with the economy while workers and farmers suffered under it. Politics during the gilded age were very corrupt due to the political influence of wealthy people. Americans were unhappy with businesses. These large businesses often had terrible practices which led people to form unions and protest in hopes of better working conditions or pay. These protests would sometimes turn violent which led to the deaths of many people.

During the Gilded Age new forms of businesses rose by monopolization, railroads and expanding corporations but along with those came new techniques of consolidation and extreme poverty. It is easy for people to assume that the impact of big businesses on the economy and politics was positive but historical evidence leads us to believe otherwise. 10% of the population owned 90% of American wealth creating an uneven distribution of wealth. In addition, the growth of federal support to big corporations led to deskilling of workers and an increase in the standard of living.
