This padlet is for Anina, Stella, Chrysie, and Eduardo to gather information from you about the issues you may be facing that the course staff team could fix or anything that's going particularly well and you want our course team to know and keep doing in the future (remember this is the first year this course is running so anything we like/don't like will most likely affect how the course continues for others).

I have formatted the padlet so that anyone can make comments to raise issues or successes and then you can vote on them; this way, if there are many, we can identify which are affecting most people and therefore the priority to be brought up in our meetings.
If you agree with someone but have something to add, up-vote their post and then make a comment for your addition.
When you make a post try to fit it into the categories set out, or the one most relevant to you comment if it spans more than one category, but if it doesn't fit into any of them use the miscellaneous category. The comments should be anonymous so you feel more comfortable raising the point but if it turns out that it's not, please let us know so we can review that in the formatting.

If you have any questions about the padlet let us know and we'll do the best to answer them! :)

A little feedback: for some seminars/practicals it feels a bit repetitive and it doesn't feel like we're learning something new. Especially when we're going over a research paper, we discuss it in small groups, then repeat the discussion in larger groups. Some only seem to have slight relevance to the lectures.

I personally find the psychology seminars/practicals lowkey useless ..felt like this last semester and this semester. The hour flies by and I do not feel like I've learnt something new to take home with me, feels repetitive at times. However, the first session in psych and development where we looked at essay skills and how to write for the correct audience was super useful. I think sessions targetted at assignment work and how to improve, would be such a better replacement for just small conversations in breakout rooms where we reiterate what the lectures said or basic comprehension questions about articles.

this may have been mentioned before but I think it is important for our teachers to keep in mind that some students are writing academically and IN ENGLISH for the first time!!! I know they don't want to give us grades for our formative essays so we don't 'rest on our laurels' or become disappointed if our summative grade is very different but we NEED guidance and some kind of idea of where we are situated on our curve. I would prefer to not go through the stress of having no idea of what my work is worth even if it means I'm slightly disappointed in the end. AND. if the grade goes down (despite modifications made according to feedback) this may indicate disparity in our markers' process and I'm sure it would be very important for them to be aware of that.... PLEASE stop underestimating how hard and stressful the transition to writing in English at uni can be.

It might be just me but i think that it would be best to have longer lecture videos (instead of 10/15 minutes per video, aggregate them all in 30/40 min videos) because i think they reduce attention span. All those little "short breaks" can lead to 20 minute interruptions so it takes a longer time to watch each topic's lecture

please please please do not say (whether this is on turnitin or through email) that our marks will be released on a certain date and then wait until about 5 minutes before this date to move it back again!! It is so frustrating when this happens because many ppl get stressed out for absolutely no reason. We would much rather you gave us a longer window or were a bit more vague as long as you stuck to your word!!! This is especially annoying when you email us saying that there will be a delay ‘of a couple of days’ but this is in fact 7-14 DAYS. This occurs in most of our modules but especially in research methods. We understand that it’s stressful for markers and you may not have an exact date or time but even just saying ‘the marks will be out next week’ and sticking to your word would be better than what’s happening at the moment.

Mathematics as a subject alone was not an entry requirement in order to get on this course and I feel that the maths is explained so briefly and presented as if it was expected that all students know and fully understand the content.

I feel like alot of the time we get feedback for our essays, alot of the critiques and reasons we get marked down is because of the personal taste of whoever is marking the paper and how they'd like us to write and talk about topics, rather than taking the questions and topics at face value. Alot of it feels like we should be giving formulaic answers and yet we're critiqued if we're too unoriginal. Overall I feel like we need greater clarity on alot of our coursework in general and what they expect of us, rather than just vague generalities and an essay structure which we're then critiqued for using. It would be nice as well if they could standardise it across subjects because we're often doing the essays at the same time and expecting completely different tones, structures, patterns of writing etc, is hard enough for native English speakers under the pressure of multiple essays let along people for who English is not a first language.

There is such a lack of understanding for the students who have never done A-Level Maths, we are being asked for so much and yet the slides are EMPTY. The reading doesn't relate to the lectures either and the pace of the lectures are too quick and lack so much detail. Simply saying 'this is a refresher for some... or not' and then going on to explain something so complicated is honestly so frustrating to see. The formative test was a mess and had nothing to do with what was taught in the lectures, as many of the rules that we needed to complete the questions were not put in the lecture.

I think she assumes that we're just supposed to 'get' the content and when we don't, she makes little effort to help explain the concepts in a clear way that is easily digestible. I don't think she's conscious or sensitive to the fact that not everyone comes from the same educational background nor learns in the same way.

The EEG practicals were a good start, and btw i’m not asking to use like a £15,000 electron microscope or dissect a bunch of rats in the name of science, just a simple real life demonstration in an actual lab or something would be a lot nicer.

There is a massive problem with how we are taught in Computing. We're taught the mathematics as if we all did A-Level maths which is the complete opposite to any other subject where we've gone over the A-Level Biology, Chemistry or Psychology stuff first before going to the degree level learning to make sure everyone has the same base of learning. We're expected to know about logarithms and derivatives and functions and the lectures are treated as refreshers rather than first time learning. I've literally had to go on Wikipedia to understand what I'm meant to do for any of the maths and pur lecturer doesn't even write the formula in an intuitive or understandable way.

The computing is just as bad, we're expected to know alot of different functions and different ways that MATLAB works without being taught any of it. I dont want to have to spend two hours on Google to learn for myself when I'm playing money specifically to be taught how to code. If that's how its going to work then I might as well not be in university and just learn to code MATLAB in my own time. We should be taught the fundamentals and we aren't.

The questions we are given both for coursework and in lesson are always really vague as well. There's different ways to interpret them and it causes everyone to struggle to understand what is actually wanted of us.

The delivery of content is poor. We are expected to use MATLAB, however we have been thrown into the deep end with this software. In the lectures, we are not taught anything about MATLAB and yet in the practical classes, we are expected to know how to complete the questions, with no background to an introduction whatsoever. This course is being delivered too fast. At least with R studio, we were introduced to basic functions and progressively built on this knowledge to understand more complex functions. This isn’t the case for MATLAB and I can speak for many that this is a very difficult course which many people are struggling with.

I understand that research is an enormously important aspect for everything we learn in this course and I am obviously very eager to learn about how research works. However, in order to have a full and comprehensive understanding of our future options we need to actually be shown our potential options that aren't just to do with research and academics. I know there are other jobs in this field that don't entail being extremely stressed and unsatisfied constantly about research being unpublished and underfunded and I would appreciate knowing these options instead of feeling as if i am being forced into research when i have not been given other career ideas.

I feel as though while studying Neuroscience and Psychology we would be exposed to labs or practicals? The EEG practicals are quite nice and actually allow us to gain experience within the field, however for a module like Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience where we are learning about techniques such as PCR, Western Blotting etc it would be nice to have practicals to teach us. Watching videos and learning the theory is not enough to gain proper experience. Having spoken to others on the course they agree. Also paying such a high tuition compared to other degrees I would assume it's because of the science aspect of it - however we aren't even getting the full experience? It would be better if we can actually go into labs for the remaining of the semester. It is honestly really dry just having to read and learn information without getting practical hands on experience. The course isn't teaching us the experimental research aspect at all.

I don't know how we are meant to learn MATLAB after having spent two years on R Studio without her even explaining things? She just gives the answers and most of the time we need to make sense of it ourselves without her explanation. Would appreciate it if she actually explain the method behind the coding. Also the math needs to be explained as well and focused on if it will be a part of the tests. Even though I have studied A level Maths it has been a long time since having used it, and I am struggling with the formative math

I've been creating my weekly deadline schedule this weekend, and I came to realize the biggest and deadliest issue with this whole major is that THERE IS NO COMMUNICATION between the modules whatsoever. By looking at the modules individually everything seems not so bad at least able to follow but by looking at the 4 modules as a whole I only see MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and TORTURE.
1. Week 5 we have 4 deadlines - Monday: journal club + grant proposal and
2. Thursday: MCN presentation + cog brain final presentation
this is firstly unfair for people doing the presentation for MCN that week because they have extra to do compared to the other half of the cohort. Secondly, this workload is not acceptable (even without the MCN presentation)
I really do think that the designing of this semester's modules and workload is way too UNBELIEVABLE and AMBITIOUS
ps. during the EEG lab the other day Katja even told me directly "we were too ambitious about the formation of this module", "and we would like you to provide feedback so we could improve for the next year".
This fully says that the module teams are aware of this issue of too much workload and too much depth of papers given to us but basically they aren't trying to change anything for us but instead will do for the next year.
I just think this is the most frustrating of all when the problem is recognized and stated but they don't give a shi*t in doing anything.
We're basically just guinea pigs for this hell new major of KCL.

This mainly goes for Molecular and Cellular and the Computing modules, but I feel like the lectures and seminars don't really work together much and leave me confused by the end of the seminars.

For Molecular and Cellular, the lectures are quite simple, with basic a level bio knowledge. Which is fine, however, the seminar prep gives very complex, high level papers that are difficult to understand. (a little point away from the main point - Wayy too much prep work for this module! I don't have enough time in my day to get it done along with the several deadlines). And whilst the papers and lectures go over the same topic, the level of difficulty between the two are very different.

For Computing module, My main issue is how we're taught maths in the lectures, which is fine, but then expected to compute everything with no knowledge of matlab. Even the assigned reading doesn't really go over some of the basics that we need for MATLAB, or at least they come later in another week. My issue with this is that I end up spending too much time trying to work out certain functions or methods that are the basics of MATLAB during the session, when I should be focusing on how to solve the questions, after already having a good knowledge on MATLAB. In the end, after countless research, I end up having to look at the answer scripts, which I feel like beats the purpose of solving the question. :(

I’m sure many people agree but the end of March and entirety of April have been awful in terms of assessments and coursework. The staff have shown a complete lack of communication between modules leading to basically four weeks where there were a minimum of two deadlines in each (these were also not small deadlines but essays or projects that take at least a week and a half to plan and organise). The worst part is April is meant to be a revision period to revise for stuff we did last term for our May exams. It is understandable to have a few deadlines in this period but I really feel like the fact we had around 10 deadlines was extremely stressful and overwhelming. The worst part is this is only our second year. It feels as if in order to get everything done, I have had to completely neglect the other parts of my life during the entire last month and a half. When were we meant to have any time to do other university activities such as mix with societies/clubs. I just feel extremely let down by the entire team and when they say “we want to make sure you don’t feel like Guinea pigs” I would just like them to know that that is all I personally feel at the moment. As I said I am extremely frustrated with this course and can not wait for a break. I feel completely burnt out and the idea of exams now after all the assignments we have done feels extremely stressful and overwhelming. For future and especially for the first years going into their second year, I really hope the staff begin talking to each other and planning better cause this has been awful :(

I'm often left feeling like I'm not able to do a Master's since I can't afford to pay for it myself but I'm not really eligible for financial support- e.g. King's offers a £5,000 staying on grant but the financial threshold much lower than other universities such as Imperial.
