In the end of the book he tells Ponyboy, “Look I’m happy working in a gas station with cars” (pg 176). You think he would be a bad kid by the way he looks and acts when he is actually a really good kid trying to do the right thing.

He wants to do good and likes to keep everyone happy.  He tries to keep Darry and Ponyboy from fighting. He is really happy working at the gas station with cars, even though his brothers would not be. “He can get drunk in a drag race or dancing without alcohol” (pg8). Life makes Soda happy.  He is good at analyzing situations and is good at talking to people. He has a turbulent personality because he likes to fight. Soda has a great personality that shows how strong he is and why he loves his family so much.

One of his strengths is his ability to defend himself and win fights.   Soda is undefeated in fights. “Soda fought for fun, Steve for hatred, Darry for pride, and Two-Bit for conformity"(pg 137).  Being a hard worker is another strength of Soda’s. Soda works full time to help support his two brothers so that they can keep Ponyboy with them and not in a foster home.  Soda has a positive attitude and is described by his brother has always grinning and happy-go-lucky. These strengths help Soda get through the tough times and give him hope that things will get better.

If we don’t have each other, we don’t have anything” (pg 176). Another example are his poor grades in school. He figures he is more valuable making money than getting an education. Soda’s flaws define him as a caring, responsible brother who sacrifices himself and his needs in order to keep his family together.

Soda loves his brothers so much that he drops out of school and gets a job.  It is the only way he can earn enough money to help Darry support his family. “Since mom and dad were killed in an auto wreck, the three of us get to stay together only as long as we behave”(pg 3). Soda is also motivated by love of his girlfriend. Soda loves her and wants to marry her. Sandy is what helps him do all the things he needs to in order to survive.
