         <description><![CDATA[<div>Modern ballet arose in the early 20th century when <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/fokine_michel_mikhail_f_1880_1942/0">Fokine</a> and <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/diaghilev_sergei_pavlovich_1872_1929/0">Diaghilev</a> (<em>See also</em> <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/ballets_russes/0">Ballets Russes</a>) combined the polished technique of the imperial Russian dancers with the naturalism advocated by the American Isadora <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/duncan_isadora_1878_1927/0">Duncan</a>. This gave scope to the talents of such dancers as <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/nijinsky_vaslav_1890_1950/0">Nijinsky</a> and <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/pavlova_anna_1885_1931/0">Pavlova</a>, the composers <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/stravinsky_igor_1882_1971/0">Stravinsky</a> and <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/ravel_maurice_1875_1937/0">Ravel</a>, the choreographers <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/massine_l%C3%A9onide_leonid_miassin_1896_1979/0">Massine</a> and <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/balanchine_george_georgy_melitonovich_balanchivadze_1904_1983/0">Balanchine</a>, and the designer <a href="http://search.credoreference.com.ezproxy.bolton.ac.uk/content/entry/move/bakst_l%C3%A9on_lev_samoilovich_rosenberg_1866_1924/0">Bakst</a>.</div>]]></description>
