Whilst many people refer to literacy to describe the ability to comprehend and produce English, they often fail to consider the endless literacy skills developed through childrens social and emotional being (Department of Education and Training, 2009). Social emotional literacy explores the capacity to “understand, express and manage our own emotions” concurrently with the ability to recognize our sense of self (Weare, 2004). It too refers to the competence in self-reflection, socialisation and the regard for diversity and difference (Matthews et al. 2002). Through Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences, social emotional literacy has subsequently become a more respected form of literacy. It has demonstrated the fundamental need for children to develop on all spectrums in order to form a holistic being (2006).

'Me' is a resource used to assist children with their overall social-emotional literacy. It provides them with the opportunity to gather a greater understanding of the diversity of people, understanding others emotions and facial expressions, genders and cultural contexts. Most importantly however, it allows children to become active citizens in society through meaning-making. As an educator, YOU have the ability to empower them to make this happen!

Through this exercise, children are able to gather an understanding of the differing facial expressions one may pull, expressing their different moods, behaviours and feelings. They too will develop an understanding that facial expressions may differ, whilst still producing the same expression. Ultimately, your student is able to benefit through visual, kinaesthetic and auditory learning styles adhering to all differing learning styes.

Activity 2 introduces faces that are further diverse (most likely people they have never seen before), pushing them past their Zone of Proximal Development.
