More than 400 people were reported dead after a tsunami struck western Java, and the southern Sumatra islands on the evening of Dec. 22, 2018. Indonesia’s geological and weather services have reported that the tsunami was likely caused by undersea landslides in the Sunda Strait following an eruption by the Anak Krakatoa volcano. World Vision, an organization that simultaneously responded to earthquakes on Lombok island and Central Sulawesi, assisted children and families in some of the worst-affected areas of the Serang and Pandeglang districts along the west coast of Java’s Banten province.`

The 1947 Gisborne earthquakes and tsunami occurred east of Gisborne and offshore from New Zealand's North Island. Both the two earthquakes are estimated to have measured at most 7.1 on the moment magnitude scale.x

The first earthquake, which struck offshore Poverty Bay on 26 March 1947 at 8:32 am NZST, seemed like a minor earthquake in Gisborne. but was 7.0–7.1 M. It generated a tsunami with a maximum measured run-up height of 10 metres that struck the coast from Māhia Peninsula to Tokomaru Bay swamping the coast between Muriwai and Tolaga Bay 30 minutes after the quake. The tsunami was not observed outside of New Zealand Four people at the Tatapouri Hotel, 13 kilometres by road north of Gisborne, saw the tsunami coming and rushed up a hill. Two waves swept through the ground floor of the hotel up to window sill height, and retreating water then washed small buildings out to sea

A 8.1 magnitude earthquake triggered a massive tsunami which caused substantial damage and loss of life in Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center recorded a 76 mm rise in sea levels near the epicenter, and New Zealand scientists determined that the waves measured 14 metres at their highest on the Samoan coast. The quake occurred on the outer rise of the Kermadec-Tonga subduction zone. This is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates in the Earth's lithosphere meet and earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.
