The Tallmadge amendment was a bill written by representative James Tallmadge of New York that stated that Missouri could join the union but only as a free state. The north thought that the bill was a great idea and strongly agreed with it. It created two new territories(Kansas and Nebraska) It abolished the Missouri compromise and said that the settlers could decide whether to permit slavery or not. The northerners hated the idea of the states becoming slave states so they sent weapons to antislavery settlers. The south sent their young men to Kansas. It was about a slave named Dred Scott who traveled to Wisconsin a free state with his master. when he got back he went to court to say his stay in Wisconsin made him a free man. The court had to make a decision about whether he was a citizen and whether his stay in Wisconsin make him a free man. On March 6th of 1857 the supreme court ruled 7-2 against Dred Scott saying that he could not sue for his freedom. They also said he could never be a citizen. The northerners were stunned by the ruling and called the court things like wicked and they had false judgement.
