         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>*Poetry is an enjoyable form of literature to present and teach.<br>*Most educators I have worked with disliked teaching the poetry unit.<br>*Using unconventional poetry&nbsp; immediately opens the students' minds to an understanding of poetry they can create.<br>*When writing poetry, students prefer less rules.<br>*Examples of poetry along with a group project on chart paper helps develop the students' aptitude to create poetry.<br>*Group created sensory poems are integral aspect when teaching poetry.<br>*Every age group will benefit and enjoy poetry.&nbsp;<br>*How to present poetry with excitement and inviting ways to students.<br>*Students should see and hear different types of poetry.<br>*Students enjoy rhythm and rhyme, having students participate and announcing what the rhyme word as you read aloud is vital.<br>*Students should not only hear the poem but see it as well to visualize the pattern and cadence.&nbsp;<br>*To create poets, students must experience poetry on a personal level.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>* Poetry is the most neglected form of literature because most people are intimidated by it and/or  had a bad experience.<br>*Research has shown in duplicate studies 20 years apart.<br>a. Kids prefer narrative poetry.<br>b. They dislike free verse and haiku.<br>c. Students like sound devices.<br>d. Funny poems, familiar experiences and animals are types of poems that students prefer.<br>e. They have a preference for contemporary poetry and language.<br>*Older poems were not written with a younger audience/students in mind.<br>Criteria for Evaluating Poetry for Children.<br>a. Is the subject of the poem something which children would be familiar?<br>b. Does the poem use imagery?<br>c. Does the poem rhyme?<br>(Young readers need the scaffolding of rhyme initially.)<br>d. How is rhythm used?<br>e. What role does sound play?<br>*Resources  for teaching poetry - Vardill and Wong.<br>*Numerous poets that specifically write to a younger audience.<br>*My school library has about 3/4 of the books listed.<br>*NCTE Awards and winners.<br>*Types of poems that various poets have written.<br>*The delightful stanza, "Books fall open, you fall in, delighted where, you never been."<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>* Challenging the staff at my school to share a poem a day - a student could easily hear 5 new poems a day if everyone participates.<br>*Asking and providing a poem materials to the principal/assistant principal for school wide morning announcements.<br>*Providing books, supplies and websites for teachers/staff to easily be able to share.<br>*Adding part of poem in my signature line.<br>*Using social media both personally and professionally to engage others in poetry.<br>*Incorporating poetry in every lesson I teach during the day - 5 different groups/classes each day.<br>*Furnishing the staff with easy access and knowledge about the poetry books in the school library.<br>*Poetry books will now be prominently displayed and encouraged in the school library.<br>*Connecting the ELAR teachers with Ruth Heller poetry books.<br>*Asking Ms. Brown, 4th grade teacher, if she would like to perform dual poems with me for her class.<br>*Looking for enthusiastic people on my campus to advance using poetry as a campus norm.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>* Realistic Fiction - the specific criteria for evaluating realistic fiction.<br>*Fantasy/Science Fiction are stories that violate the laws of physical reality.<br>*Science fiction is a sub genre of fantasy.<br>*Criteria for evaluating science fiction and fantasy for children,<br>a. The characters behave consistently and in believable ways but there is an unusual or fantasy aspect to the storyline.<br>b. There are rules for the fantasy world.<br>c. Authors must assist readers for the fantasy world.<br>d. Themes should explore universal truths.<br>*Types of Science Fiction.<br>a. Apocalyptic - during a catastrophe at the end of the world.<br>b. Post Apocalyptic - takes place past the end of the world/catastrophe. A new civilization and usually primitive compared to modern times.<br>c. Steampunk, cyberpunk and biopunk - it incorporates the power of the time or setting.  <br>d. Dystopia - characteristics of big government, lack of freedom of choice and thought, a super head figure, corruption and resistant or overthrow of that government or establishment.<br>e. Extrasensory Perception - (ESP) Thought transference, telepathic and clairvoyance.<br>f. Robots/Androids/Cyborgs and Artificial Intelligence.<br>g. Space/Aliens - Extra Terrestrial.<br>h. Time Travel/Parallel Universe - accidental or purposeful travel through time vehicles. <br>i. Virtual Reality/Gaming.<br>j. Miscellaneous.<br>*Many books of science fictions blends various types of science fiction.<br>*Many titles of books to explore or refer YA to read.</div>]]></description>
