off with a quick anticipatory set demonstration using peanut M&M’s. Each student gets a snack size pack of M&M's.

Students will relate the
thickness of the 3 layers of the peanut M&Ms to the 3 layers of the earth. By
applying pressure to the M&M students can also observe the type of plate
boundaries that we have on earth.

Students can then eat the other M&M's after the anticipatory set is done.

My 9th graders began our unit on "The Most Dangerous Game", and I stayed behind the desk until the bell rang. I was dressed in hunting camouflage and combat boots to get the attention of my students as we started to read the well-known story about hunting humans for sport. We did a true/false and four corners activity in which students had to move from corner to corner of the classroom to show their attitudes and background knowledge about statements like "hunting is a sport" and "animals don't have feelings" as an anticipatory activity before reading. This allowed students to assess their attitudes and knowledge prior to reading as well as focus on key concepts presented in the text.
