There are many reasons we are told the pilgrims came to America: religious freedom, a fresh start, escape from a corrupt government, or running away from disease-stricken community. Based on The Pilgrim Fathers: A Perilous Voyage, the pilgrims did not only choose to leave their homeland, but were run out of it. In a time when opinions were suppressed, there was a group of people who refused to let their beliefs be held down. According to the video, a group that believed in nonconformity, freedom of religion, and speech were constantly persecuted. This group was otherwise known as the pilgrims.

The Puritans of Salem,, Massachusetts valued their religion, and not much besides that. They had numerous laws created in affect of their religious beliefs. They also had ill feelings towards the Indians that lived in the forest near their town, because of their refusal to comply with their beliefs.
These values shaped their American Dream in the way it directly affected their society. They believed their society would prosper if only they kept God close, and had many laws to withhold that. Entertainment was very limited, and they did not celebrate many holidays, if any.
