PBl and Our Digital World by Mrs. Reisen's Math Class - PBL and our Digital World

Problem Based Learning takes what we are doing in class come alive and have meaning for students with real world settings. This translates to true understanding and thinking skills students might not get from just "sit and get" teaching that I know I was comfortable with for 20+ years.

Most teachers feel they do not have time to implement one more thing in their classrooms but I attest it works and it is not a lot of change to your teaching schedule. Your "End of the Course" test scores will show huge growth by helping kids think in a different way.

The yellow bars are the results from previous year's work before PBL. I had worked HARD for 3 years with Algebra II classes trying to inch our way each year closer to the state projected target for EOC test scores. Please note: The students were not any different year to year on ability levels. The blue bars are the scores of our students after teaching the same concepts, using the same prep information and the same teacher for 4 years teaching the same way I had for 20+ years but with one extra component - PBL . I tried 5 projects that year not knowing how it would effect the test scores for my students but knew I wanted to try PBL for their benefit.

For me, not much. I simply mentioned at the beginning of a unit of study what our next "career focus" would be. While giving notes that were related to information they would need to use in the project I would remind them how it could relate to the career focus for the unit. I would give any vocabulary components, diagrams or drawing in five minutes time sprinkled through out the unit as they worked on another concept that would help them get a "final product". Once we had learned 3/4 to all the material needed for the project then we would set aside one week in class for group work. By the end of the week their groups needed to be able to present their final ideas and work.

What was amazing was as you worked and had a digital question just ask the students for help - they normally knew a website or had a digital solution to what you described you needed the computer to do. You are still the expert in the subject content and asking for help involved them in a HUGE way. When I would work with them on a problem they would take ownership and pride that they helped you and their peers. We had student technology presentations on power point, excel, sway and office 365 that lasted maybe 5 minutes. I learned from students that presented to both me and the class all because I was not sure "what button to push". It only took a couple of "not sure" moments and now the digital world is not as hard to navigate. Helping students with technology sites they are not exposed to in video game or app worlds will only help them march boldly into their future careers - WIN WIN situation.

It can record just audio and screen shots (I always did because of not showing student images just student work). It can record web camera and audio (maybe used for a Science lab project or an English Reenactment of book works) - or a combination of both. Once the video is done it can save to a video file on your computer, straight to "you tube" and other options. Super easy and fast to use between student presentations in a single class period.

When setting up groups only have 3 to 4 students in a group setting and make sure you have all areas of strengths and weakness levels in each group. The ones who are strong in the subject will help and tutor the ones that are weaker in the content area. Be aware these personality types will not like to release control of the final product so they will need to learn to share the outcome of the final project even if it was not done completely the way they would have envisioned. The ones weaker in the subject area will not just copy or wait for others that have more content knowledge in the group to do the work because each project should have a "group grade" component and an "individual grade" component to help with the temptation to just allow others to complete the project without any input.
