What is it?

Disciplinary Literacy

An emphasis on the shared ways of reading, writing, speaking, and

thinking within a particular content area or academic field. Disciplinary

literacy practices are cultural constructions that are not learned simply

by observing, and it is AVID’s philosophy that educators need to make

explicit the discipline-specific literacy practices of their content area in

order for students to know how to read, write, speak, and think like

mathematicians, historians, scientists, and any other content expert.
