We chose electro swing because it reflected our humorous story. The music also makes fun of the main character which is sort of how we want people to feel. The music also has some sort of modern vibe to it so it matches our plot quite well.

In my opinion, I found the form and structure of this group’s movement piece very clear and quite easy to understand. At the very beginning of the piece, one of the actors opened a door, so straight away you knew that it would take place within a room or building. Then, the clues given to the audience that it was specifically in a restaurant was the person further back on stage that seemed to rhythmically be preparing some kind of dish, and assuming this person was a chef made it obvious to see that this restaurant would at least be the main location of the act. Another thing this group did to show where they were was when this chef came over with the menu. So although the location was quite easy to figure out, another possible action would be clearly showing a chair, pulling it out from the table and then sitting down. Then, depending on which character does this action, it could show the personality of him/her quite effectively: if the celebrity pulls the chair from the table, it could be done with only three fingers to show delicacy, while if the body-guard pulls it for the celebrity, the movement would most likely be more slow yet sharp, and careful at the same time. The way they established who they were was through their way of walking onto stage. The celebrity was clearly a celebrity as she walked slowly and carefully, and on what seemed to be high heels. The bodyguard walked confidently, which was shown by holding his head high, chest out, applying short, sharp movements and by sticking closely behind the celebrity. One section of the story that could have been slightly more clear was when the bodyguard was ordering the food from the cook for the celebrity. I had to watch it two or three times before realizing what they were doing, and I think the reason for this was that both the cook and bodyguard were not completely staying in character. They seemed to be slightly distracted by what their teammates were doing and therefore constantly turning their heads around instead of focusing entirely on their own mini act.

In this group’s story, the moments of tension and conflict were evident and realistic. The tension started when the paparazzi began invading the celebrity’s personal space and taking lots of photos of her. This got her really impatient and she starts punching the photographer. At this point, I really enjoyed how you can already feel the mood change and become slightly more tense and exciting. However, in the second conflict when the paparazzi pushes the chef (causing him to spill the whole dish on the celebrity), the structure of the story starts breaking up slightly and suddenly a lot is going on at the same time: the bodyguard is chasing the paparazzi who is trying to run away and the cook attempts escaping the situation innocently while the celebrity seems to be looking around to see whats happening. This is a lot for the audience and the sudden acceleration in movements makes it a bit confusing. If the same scene was acted a little slower, each action would have a stronger significance, and this could be noticed by the audience. In this story, I found the moments of conflict realistic as - in the real world - it is no pretend that celebrities get bombarded with pictures wherever they go. A paparazzi in a restaurant may be slight exaggeration yet it is believable.

The personality of each character was shown mostly with their reactions to other character’s actions or simply by the way they stood up or walked around. I found that characters like the celebrity kind of lost their personality as the story moved on and the more the situation became excited, the less we saw the personality traits that we had seen at the start. I understand very well that trying to keep acting such a personality can become hard when so much is happening at the same time, but giving clues like a simple hair flip, smoothening out the clothes or holding her head high will remind the audience of who she is and what her role is. At times, the celebrity would take out some makeup or her phone, and already this showed well her personality, though through more of these small actions, the audience will get to know the character even better. Similarly, the bodyguard started off with a very strong, serious personality, and as the story moved on, he seemed to become more like the celebrity’s friend than her guard. Both these have a very strong character which they need to be careful not to lose. Having a slightly less chaotic story would help them with this, though if they would prefer keeping the story as it is, simply taking the time to remember who they are and offering a small gesture would keep their character’s personality more stable and constant. They did well showing different emotions with their body, for example when the celebrity and paparazzi were laughing at the bodyguard who had slipped and fallen, they were shaking their shoulders and covering their mouth with their hands while pointing at him. This suggests greatly that they were laughing, though even more exaggerated movements and maybe the clapping of hands would make this even more evident. Other times however, I found that they could try different gestures to represent the same emotion, or the same gesture but way more exaggerated. The moment I think of most is when the cook spills the dish onto the celebrity. Here, the cook could over-exaggerate the slipping and look more confused and sorry. To do this, he could bend down slightly or clumsily offer a napkin… This also goes for the celebrity, as you can tell that she is not very happy, but wider, sharper movements of the hands would make her look utterly mad.

I found that their choice of music fits well with the mood of their piece: always slightly chaos and their characters very energized. However, the ‘bounciness’ of the music resembles more to one of a circus or festival, which could possibly lead the audience into the wrong direction when thinking about the location. I think that music which also has a relatively fast tempo yet becomes more tense as the story goes on would fit this group’s movement piece better. By ‘more tense,’ I think of it mostly as an increasing tempo, new instruments or a different melody. Currently, I find it hard to pick out the areas in the music that are supposed to represent conflict. They show this conflict very well within the acting field, yet if the music had a building tension as well, I think that the audience could be more engaged and willing to watch.

I think that rhythm and timing could become very useful to this group when the conflict happens as - by that point - everyone is standing up and running around, so if they were running around to the beat or the pace of the music, the organization within the chaos would give the audience a higher chance of following whats happening. I did not notice much synchronization with the music other than in the beginning of the story when the celebrity and bodyguard looked one way while the paparazzi ducked the other. This happened on three drum beats of the music before introducing the more bouncy melody. It is these simple synchronized movement that stick in the audience’s heads, so I definitely think that this group should attempt adding more. For example, closer to the end of the piece when the bodyguard is trying to keep the paparazzi away from the celebrity, they could synchronously take two or three steps in a type of semi-circle and end up on the opposite side from where they started at. It wouldn’t be too difficult yet would look more pleasing to the eye.

I think that space is the element that this group used the most. There was not a single moment in the act of which one of the character’s was not walking across the stage to get somewhere else. Every piece of ground was used up at some point in the story which I find shows very well just about how much was going on. However, one thing I think they did a little bit of but could exaggerate even more was the proxemics. It was clear that the celebrity was an important person as she took some height, but it didn’t take very long for her to get carried away and become as tall as everyone else.
