The quote above by Walden’s poem, “Where I lived and What I Lived For,” was shocking to me due to the fact the Walden would wake up early in the morning in order to bathe in the pond and watch the sun rise. Walden decided to live in a Transcendental manner, thus he decided to lived in a cabin near a pond in a forest for more than two years of his life. Walden tried to be as Transcendent as he can by keeping the windows open all day and night in order for nature to flow inside his cabin while he sleeps. Walden does experience some difficulties such as getting bit by mosquitos and helps the reader feel the feelings of nature by employing imagery to his writing. Transcendentalism is beneficial during today’s society because it is recommended by doctors for people to spend their day outside in the sun with nature because it is healthy for them. Doctors have also explained that individuals who spend their time with nature and being healthy will live longer. This hypothesis by doctors have been proven by Walden who lived about 45 years on earth while the average age in the 1800s was about 38 years.

The quote above by Emerson’s poem, “Self Reliance,” was shocking to me due to the fact the Emerson wanted all individuals to disclose their secrets because secrets should be conveyed to the world. Emerson tries to convince his audience to disclose their secrets by employing a motivational tone in order for them to alert the world of their secrets. He explains that people should not be shy and hide their secrets from others but instead share it in order to feel relief and not have to stress about them. This quote applies to today’s society because most people are insecure about themselves and they shouldn’t. An example of this can be seen in people's’ appearances. Women tend to put makeup on in order to hide their true appearance because they think they are not good looking. If Emerson was alive to this day, he would argue that females should be happy with who they are because God made each person unique.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole fits with one of the four basic tenets of Transcendentalism. The song fits with the correspondence between the microcosm of the individual and the macrocosm of the universe. Kamakawiwo’ole compares nature and humankind with beauty and explains how they are both needed to form beauty. Kamakawiwo’ole explains that somewhere over the rainbow he sees “trees of green and red roses too I’ll watch them bloom for me and you”. Here he provided an imagery of natural beauty around him that he appreciates. Later in his song, he explains that people take natural beauty for granted, even simple things such as watching, “Well I see skies of blue and I see clouds of white And the brightness of the highlight the dark”. He also explains that the only thing that equals the beauty of nature is seeing the beauty of mankind cooperating together, “The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of the people passing by I see friends shaking hands Sayin, ‘How do you do?’ They’re really saying, I… I love you’”. Kamakawiwo’ole continues to explicit his desire to go over the rainbow where there is no trouble but peace and live happily with nature and humans, “Someday I’ll wish upon a star Wake up where the clouds are far behind me where trouble melts like lemon drops High above the chimney top that’s where you’ll find me Oh, somewhere over the rainbow, way up high And the dream that you dare to, who, oh why can’t I? I?”. The lyrics that Kamakawiwo’ole used helped create a connection between individuals and nature by singing that the beauty of the rainbow is pretty when parallel with the sky and when parallel on humans’ faces. Overall, Kamakawiwo'ole expresses the necessity of nature in humans because nature leads them to love and peace.

Mother Nature gives life to organisms thus we as humans should spend more time with her. Once people understand this aspect, they will start to and continue to Transcend for the rest of their long lived lives.

Transcendentalism is a spiritual, philosophical, and literary movement that called for more interactions with nature and the world. Transcendentalism first appeared in New England towards the middle of the 19th century that protested against the general cultures and societies due to their independent time with nature. Transcendentalist emphasized nature as a source of human inspiration. Many Transcendentalist wrote poems expressing their emotions towards natures and explaining how important it is in their daily life. They notices that many societies did not spend their life with nature, thus wrote poems about how it is important for individuals to allocate their lives with nature. Many Pragmatists argued that reaching out to nature is difficult due to their busy schedule.

Pragmatists are unable to transcend during modern times due to their busy schedules. Pragmatists can explain this by clarifying their schedules. Most kids, teens, and young adults are busy with school and school work. They spend about six to seven hours of their day in school and about one to eight hours of their time doing homework-depending on their age and courses that they are taking and then sleep and repeat. Younger individuals have more free time due to their slight homework. They have the choice to spend their time outside with nature or inside on their electronics. Most of these individuals prefer staying inside where it’s not too cold or too warm and they tend to enjoy spending their time on video games. As for the older individuals, they spend most of their time with school work or at their workplace. Younger and older individuals have free time during the weekend but they tend to spend it at shopping centers, arcades, or stay they stay home watching TV or playing more video games.

Overall, individuals are unable to spend their time transcending due to their busy schedule or their preference to stay inside entertaining themselves with electronics or going to civilized areas such as malls. This problem can be solved by eliminating these electronics but it is nearly impossible due to their obsession with these electronics.
