Long-term causes of revolution (underlying tensions)

Leading up to the revolution, the Spanish Crown imposed heavy taxation and trade restrictions. Related to this, The Creole elites were very frustrated with economic policies favoring Spain. Another problem was that there was a rigid social hierarchy with limited mobility. Most people resented local Spanish officials' corruption and abuse of power. When the revolution started, the Latin leaders had inspiration from other revolutions, namely the American and French Revolutions. Another thing that helped spark the revolution was Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1808 also weakened Spanish control over its colonies, leading to an easier start for the revolution.

On July 20, 1810, the Viceroy allowed for limited independence. This led to people wanting full independence.

There was also a confrontation between Creole elites and Spanish authorities, leading to the Creoles disliking the Spanish crown. This led to the establishment of a local government, freeing the Colombians and giving them their independence.

The Gran Colombian independence ended as disagreements and internal conflicts arose among its regions, leading to its dissolution. Simón Bolívar's dream of a unified Gran Colombia faded, paving the way for the emergence of separate nations like Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.

In 1808 napoleon invaded spain which weakened their economy and government. This lead to an extreme decrease in their control of their governments. Because of this decrease, Colombians realized this and it made it so much easier for them to set up their local government and become indepenendent in the future.

In July of 1810, The Viceroy who was acting as the leader of the colony in Venezuela gave colombia partial independence, and once the Colombians got a taste of how it feels, they started pushing for full independence from Spain, even if it meant they had to manage themselves and not another country.

In 1819, the Battle of Bocoya commenced. This battle is significant as the patriot forces defeated the royalists again. This helped as it once again showed that they could defeat them if they wanted to, giving the people more confidence and paving the way for independence for the Colombians.

Simon Bolivar was inspired by the Enlightenment notion of a people's right to sovereignty. He familiarized himself with the politics of Europe and the writings of the Enlightenment and became particularly attracted to the writings of Montesquieu. Simón Bolívar was inspired by the Enlightenment's emphasis on freedom and equality. After studying Enlightenment ideas at home and in Europe, Bolivar returned to Venezuela and raised an army to fight for independence from Spain. Bolívar sought to free Gran Colombia from Spanish colonial rule and establish a republican government based on Enlightenment principles. The revolution aimed to create a society where all individuals would be equal before the law and have the right to participate in government.
