10 Point Program - BPP Values!

The Black Panther Party was an organization founded in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The organization focused on black liberation and combating police brutality, but also included Marxist-Leninist ideas about class struggle, and promoted the liberation and solidarity of oppressed peoples worldwide. The Black Panther Party used the 10 Point Program as a base of the party: "...a list of things that they wanted for African Americans. In other words, equal education, housing, jobs, and basic opportunities as whites" (Weebly).
Also, the party took advantage of open carry laws to patrol black neighborhoods armed, monitoring police arrests to prevent abuse. The BPP also held antiwar rallies and protests, allied with other activist groups, and set up various "survival programs" which provided free food, education, healthcare, and more to predominately black communities.

WORK CITED HERE:

Code Switching is when someone changes the way they act, they dress in a way to help them fit in with a certain environment. I have learned from code switching that people "judge you by the first 8 feet, 8 seconds, 8 words". This is pretty cool to think about. So when someone code switches they are altering their personality to try to fit in.

Police Accountability and microaggressions

Police accountability is where police and the law enforcement are responsible for any actions that are to harm the civilization. But there were times where this wasn't working, why would this happen? One reason can be the mindset pushed on to the police when they're in training, one main idea being how police officers "are always in danger", "...they tend to believe that they must always be prepared to use force against them — sometimes even disproportionate force" (VOX) This mindset of the police, and racial stereotypes against POC add more fuel to the aggressions by the police, "The prejudice usually occurs when police see POC and feel sudden , so the smallest mistake can take a life." (VOX). A lot of what police do to POC has been influenced on them, with more racist actions that they think are for "self-defense" has been justified by the law enforcement. It doesn't matter how big or small the action was, all that matters was, is it racist or not. According to the same article, most officers are cis-white male and straight, "... remain overwhelmingly white, male, and straight... suggest that police heavily favor Republicans." (VOX) These are just few ideas of why police aren't held accountable for their racist actions, some can be more environmental and some can be more psychological.
The article use: Beauchamp, Zach.
Why leaving a gang is so difficult (Diyanah Tribble)

For many years, especially as being associated with gangs became more popular, the youth have been struggling to leave behind these criminal involvements. We can see that in the story of David, a Seattle high school student. Despite is fairly well upbringing as a child, he explains that he decided to join a gang after his parents divorced in the 6th grade. The article says he felt, "Lied to", and felt like his family gave up on him However, when a certain event took place, he decided he wanted to move on from this criminal activity. One day when he and his friend from the Central District were walking, a few men from Davids affiliation threatened to jump him because of a rivalry. David took the risk of siding with his friend, and is now seen as a traitor. According to the article, he said, "You're not going to beat him up just because he's from the CD (Central District). He's a cool dude. This is my guy." This risks his safety so much that he was almost jumped by those same men at a school football game. The reason why leaving gangs can be so dangerous is because loyalty is a huge part of gang culture. Ex-members can also pose as a threat to the gang because they can possibly tell their secrets to authorities.

WORK CITED:

Portrayal of POC in television and movies can tend to lead towards harmful stereotypes. The author writes that Hollywood "predominantly casts white men as heroes, while erasing or subordinating other groups are villains, sidekicks, and sexual objects" (Yuen). *cough cough atla live action*

Newspapers and News outlets show an unrealistic portrayal of African American people in the news. White families are more likely to be depicted as financially stable and have good families whereas black people are more likely to be depicted as poor or have more family issues (this can be through choice of news stories or images). An example of this is that black people "represent 37 percent of criminals shown in the news, but constitute 26 percent of those arrested on criminal charges..." (Jan) on the other hand, white people are portrayed as criminals "28 percent of the time, when FBI crime reports show they make up 77 percent of crime suspects," (Jan).

Works cited:
Yuen, Nancy Wang.

Educational inequality exists throughout the world. It mainly affects disadvantaged people, such as low income groups or certain racial groups. Often times, these people miss out on opportunities because of the way society sees them. For example, a group of "lower" caste people in India, called Dalits, have been denied access to education because they are seen as untouchable and dirty, "The Dalits, also known as the scheduled caste or untouchables, have experienced consistent denial to access to education since the 1850s. This decade coincided with Britain’s established control over India, which meant many of the improvements to Dalit education were coming from outside influences, rather than from the national government."

Microaggressions are subtle behaviors that are directed at a member of a marginalized group that has a harmful effect on people, usually minorities. Unlike other forms of discrimination, the perpetrator of a microaggression may or may not be aware of the harmful effects of their behavior. There are several types of Microaggresions: Microassaults, Microinsults, and Microinvalidations. Microassaults is the most overt type of microaggression. With microassaults, the person committing the microaggression acted intentionally and knew their behavior might be hurtful. Microinsults are more subtle than Microassaults, but still have harmful effects on people. Microinvalidations are comments and remarks that deny the experiences of people who have been hurt by racism. A common microaggression is insisting that prejudice is not a problem in society anymore. "A commmon experience that balck men talk about is being followed around in stores or getting on an elevator and have people move away and grab their purses or their wallets", "Someone commenting on how well an Asian American speaks English, which presume the Asian American was not born here, is one exmaple of a microagression.", (NPR).

     - WORK CITED -

Thoughtco, https://www.thoughtco.com/microaggression-definition-examples-4171853

Andrew Limbong, NPR,
https://www.npr.org/2020/06/08/872371063/microaggressions-are-a-big-deal-how-to-talk-them-out-and-when-to-walk-away

Medical News Today, https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/microagressions

Psychology Today, https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/microaggression

Redlining, one of the racist housing policies, has been around since the 1930s. The act of redlining is when a neighborhood whose population is majorly a certain race or ethnicity is refused a mortgage or worse rates. In these neighborhoods, loans are difficult to get or completely unavailable. When this first began, residential security maps were created that determined whether or not a neighborhood would be a good investment or not. The maps showed that neighborhoods where the majority of residents were white were good investments. Although it has since been banned in 1968, the effects still hurt minorities today. A study done by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition showed that "the vast majority of neighborhoods marked 'hazardous' in red ink on maps drawn by the federal Home Owners’ Loan Corp. from 1935 to 1939 are today much more likely than other areas to comprise lower-income, minority residents" (The Washington Post).

Lockwood, Beatrix. The History of Redlining. ThoughtCo, 16 June 2020, https://www.thoughtco.com/redlining-definition-4157858.

Jan, Tracy. Redlining was banned 50 years ago.

Race and ethnicity issues in music has led to many discussions and criticisms within society. I personally believe the press and mass media are to blame for influencing society’s ideas of what is and isn’t acceptable within a race or ethnic group. This is can be seen as being portrayed in TV, film, news stories, music videos etc.

Racial discrimination was far worse during the 50’s and 60’s in music especially when it came to black African American artists. The music would be taken from them and covered by white people in order for it to appeal to white audiences. Black musicians would be paid very little or not at all while it was the white musicians benefiting financially from the music. It was at a time when black musicians would have little or no creative rights.

Today things are obviously not that extreme, however they still have to deal with race issues in music.

Music such as rap and R&B is considered black music, preformed by mostly black musicians for a predominately black audience. The lyrics and videos are nearly always based around gun crime, domestic abuse, drug use and criminal behavior. It’s not just white people using music to display these stereotypes, black people also portray themselves in this way as well due to what is portrayed as the way of life in the media. Black rappers play in to the stereotypes set by the mass media such as disrespecting women, gun crime etc. It’s not just African Americans that are subject to racial and ethnic discrimination. Unfortunately nearly all races and ethnic groups are discriminated against in some way or other.

The housing shortage in 1933 led to the practice of implementing racist housing policies such as redlining or blockbusting. These policies were implemented by the government and banks because they were trying to build newer and predominantly white housing communities and they believed that certain ethnic groups could not be eligible for loans. The practice of redlining involves categorizing different communities and neighborhoods based on the amount of certain of ethnic groups and races. Then, the communities with the largest amount of residents who were of a certain race would be redlined and be labeled as not eligible for a loan on the basis of race. And the communities with the most white residents would be presumed to be eligible for loans and a safe investment. These racist policies were typically targeted towards African Americans. By cutting off communities from financial aid and resources, these communities were separated from resources. This eventually led to communities with either predominantly white residents or communities with predominantly African Americans. Even though these practices were outlawed by the government in 1968 due to the fair housing act, the after effects still show today and hurt many minorities. And subtler racist policies and methods are still being put into practice today.

The Washington Post.

Microaggressions is a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority. Microaggressions are more than just insults, insensitive comments, or generalized jerky behavior. They're something very specific: the kinds of remarks, questions, or actions that are painful because they have to do with a person's membership in a group that's discriminated against or subject to stereotypes. And a key part of what makes them so disconcerting is that they happen casually, frequently, and often without any harm intended, in everyday life. This is how psychologist Derald W. Sue , who's written 2 books on micro aggression , defines the term: "The everyday slights, indignities, put downs and insults that people of color, women, LGBT populations or those who are marginalized experiences in their day-to-day interactions with people." Research has also shown that microaggressions, although they're seemingly small and sometimes innocent offenses, can take a real psychological toll on the mental health of their recipients. This toll can lead to anger and depression and can even lower work productivity and problem-solving abilities.

Examples of Micro aggression:

Here, students quote the things people have said to them ("You're so lucky to be black — so easy to get into college," and "You can't be a woman if you can't reproduce,") and vent about their frustrations with the types of comments they have to field ("'What are you?' is not an introduction").

MLA citing-
Desmond-Harris, Jenée. “What Exactly Is a Microaggression?” Vox, 16 Feb. 2015, www.vox.com/2015/2/16/8031073/what-are-microaggressions.

https://www.vox.com/2015/2/16/8031073/what-are-microaggressions

Just like any society gangs have their own diverse culture that can include tattoos, beliefs, music, clothing, graffiti, and values. Tattoos in gangs often symbolize loyalty or actions. Gangs use tattoos to identify what gang they are in and their actions such as significant life events. Many gangs have overlapping beliefs on many things. Many gangs believe in a chain of respect, idolization of mothers, and disproval of non-familial women. Gangs have a strict rule system, "The consequences for engaging in prohibited behaviors, particularly snitching, may be violent— including beatings, having one’s tongue cut out, and even murder." (leap). Gangs are often associated with gangster rap which promotes drugs and violence and demishes women down to sex objects. Gangs use clothing to identify who's who. Clothing is often colored to show what gang someone is a part of.

Citation:
Leap, Jorja M. Gang Subculture.

What is Black Lives Matter? Well, BLM is an ideological and political movement in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It all began in 2013, with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African American Trayvon Martin. Three radical Black organizers — Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi — created a Black-centered political will and movement building project called #BlackLivesMatter. It was in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman. Works Cited Herstory.

Racist housing policies is forcing colored people to live in designated cities. For this to happen they didn't let people of color buy or own properties in certain communities. Others separated neighborhoods by permitting only single-family households to be built in most desirable neighborhoods. Then pricing out most households of color from these areas. Also, it limited their rights to own and sell properties. NPR wrote a article about racist housing policies and wrote, "The government's efforts were "primarily designed to provide housing to white, middle-class, lower-middle-class families. African Americans and other people of color were left out of the new suburban communities and pushed instead into urban housing projects." This clearly explains how they were trying to separate colored people from the whites and how they used different strategies to keep them away.

Citations:
https://www.berkeleyside.org/2018/09/20/redlining-the-history-of-berkeleys-segregated-neighborhoods

https://www.npr.org/2017/05/03/526655831/a-forgotten-history-of-how-the-u-s-government-segregated-america

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has many different causes and outcomes. It is described as both a multidimensional disorder and an anxiety disorder. While most link it to those who have fought in a war, anyone who has experienced a traumatic event can get PTSD. There are "An estimated 7.7 million American [who] have suffered or are suffering from PTSD and another eight percent of the population will eventually develop the disorder" (Best Day Psychiatry and Counseling). Symptoms don't always appear instantly, some people could get symptoms years later and other could get them right after the traumatic event. There are 5 different categories of PTSD, some that can lead to PTSD and others that are diagnosed as PTSD. Each category requires different treatment methods.

The fist category is Normal Stress Response, it can occur before PTSD but does not always lead to it. Events that can trigger it are "injuries, illnesses, surgeries and other sources of unreasonable amounts of tension and stress…" (Best Day Psychiatry and Counseling). The second category is Acute Stress Disorder and people who have been exposed to what would feel like a life threatening event can get it. Though other things like the loss of a job, natural disasters, loss of a loved one, or the risk of death can all lead to acute stress disorder. Uncomplicated PTSD occurs when someone experiences only one traumatic event and starts experiencing symptoms. Complex PTSD is caused from exposure to multiple traumatic events. Individuals with Complex PTSD can also be diagnosed with dissociative disorders or borderline or antisocial personality disorder. Comorbid PTSD implies that a person has more than one mental health concern, it is often paired with substance abuse issues. It "is extremely common, as many people suffer from more than one condition" (Best Day Psychiatry and Counseling).

Best Day Psychiatry and Counseling.

Many newspapers and major media outlets depict a distorted and false image of the black community. Black families are usually depicted as "overwhelmingly poor, reliant on welfare, absentee fathers and criminals," (Jan), on the other hand, white families in the media are shown as "sources of social stability" (Jan). For instance, a study found that "black families represent 59 percent of the poor portrayed in the media, according to the analysis, but account for just 27 percent of Americans in poverty..." (Jan) but, also according to the media, "white families make up 17 percent of the poor depicted in news media, but make up 66 percent of the American poor..." (Jan).

Television also like the major new outlets has a very powerful influence on shaping the opinions and views of the viewers about the African American community. And although Hollywood prides itself on its progressive politics, it has another problem, a diversity problem mainly in regards to the people who make the shows and shape the storylines and characters in those shows, like executive producers and head writers who make hiring decisions and also TV writers. For example, "fewer than 10 percent of the shows were led by minority showrunners, and only 14 percent of writers across all shows were members of a minority group, even though minorities represent nearly 40 percent of the population" (Jan).

Works Cited:
Tracy Jan, News media offers consistently warped portrayals of black families, study finds, The Washington Post, Dec. 13, 2017, https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/11/06/how-white-tv-writers-shape-the-stories-hollywood-tells-america/

Tracy Jan, How white TV writers decide the stories Hollywood tells America, The Washington Post, November 6, 2017, https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/11/06/how-white-tv-writers-shape-the-stories-hollywood-tells-america/

An example of this is how as said in Newsela, "Banks have tactics that have targeted these same neighborhoods for predatory lending - that is, forcing someone into a loan they cannot pay off.".

The Washington Post. Newsela, Redlining prevents minority families from becoming home owners. Adapted Version.
