when stating that the art had removed all meaning, it becomes appropriation in the sense that such a large community are being impacted. even whilst trying to remove art from all pre conceived meanings, if you place the art in the social context it immediately is going to attract attention of those people within the culture. it is exactly if i made art pulling all meaning away from the cross and religion and changing it in an almost disrespectful way, you would never escape the real life context and backlash would be expected

I think Walters' use of the koru motif is a legitimate artistic decision as I believe he liked the symbol and aesthetic of the koru, and did not intend to disregard the Maori culture at all through its use in his art, but rather to establish his own unique style in the art world.

I believe that Gordon Walters used the Koru motif as a legitimate artistic decision but was obviously unaware that he was appropriating the Maori culture. As he was supposedly an admirer of Maori culture, I do not believe that he was appropriating from a post colonial sense, but rather out of lack of knowledge on the Koru and his meanings.

I believe that Walters' use of the koru motif is a legitimate artistic decision as it was not ill-intended nor was it meant as a means of disrespect. In the same way that Warhol frequently appropriates images from mass media, Walters is merely choosing to adopt the koru motif and explore the ways in which it can be used in his work.

I believe that it was a legitimate artistic decision. This is due to the idea that the art itself had no specific meaning attached to it, and the koru shape was changed to fit Walters' intentions for the art work. In my opinion, had Walters not changed the Koru shape at all, then it would be considered to be a move of post-colonial appropriation.

Although Walters stated " the forms I use have no descriptive value in themselves and are used solely to demonstrate relations.", I believe that he did not intend for his use of the koru symbol to disrespect the Maori culture therefore the artistic choice he made is not appropriation but inspiration. Walters made a legitimate artistic decision in selecting a symbol, and through the process of transformation the shape is able to portray a new idea.
