NIYYAH IN IBADAH

For the first meeting with my usrah members, I was assigned to share about niyyah in ibadah. Basically, niyyah (Arabic: نِيَّةٌ, variously transliterated niyyah, niyya [ˈnij.jah], "intention") is an Islamic concept: the intention in one's heart to do an act for the sake of God (Allah). The general Islamic principle of Niyah i.e. Intention is laid out in Chapter 33 (Al-Ahzab) of the Holy Quran in Ayat (Verse) 5, which goes as:
Chapter 33, Verse 5:
‘’….There is no blame on you for what you do by mistake, but (only) for what you do intentionally. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’’
Thus, among the prerequisites of a ceremonial prayer, one's niyyah, or intention, is of the utmost importance. The requirement for an audible utterance of niyyah is up for discussion. The majority of scholars concur that niyyah does not need to be pronounced because it comes from the heart, nonetheless.

For this week, this topic was our last to be discussed together. First of all, a person who gives alms in secret so that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives is an illustration of the sincerity of the heart of the person who gives alms. Indeed, there are not many who can hide the good he does.

There will definitely be a feeling of excitement and want to show off to get praise and flattery from the public or at least someone knows the good he did.

Many also feel dissatisfied if the gift is not known to people, let alone if the charity is of high value. However, a small almsgiving with a sincere heart will be accepted by God while God rejects a lot of almsgiving but is full of pride and arrogance. When Allah SWT talks about the characteristics of pious people, Allah SWT states that one of those characteristics is the person who spends wealth in His way.

The words of Allah SWT: "And in their wealth, (there is also a portion that they determine to be) the right of the poor who ask and the poor who refrain (from asking)." (Surah Az-Zariyat, verse 19).

When we contribute, of course we will contribute to the needy and incompetent groups such as the poor, which with that contribution the poor will feel that they are still being cared for by the wealthy.
