Responsibility

I’m not sure if I learned or even relearned this through On Course, but It did help push these already growing thoughts about it. For as long as I could remember I never wanted to take responsibility for the things in my life that I should. My car accident, I blamed my car not working. My slipping grades, I blamed on my depression that I got from my parents. Me being fired from my long-term job, I blamed my boss for not accepting the fact that I got a piercing.

During this last incident, I tried to take my own life. From then on, I looked at life differently. It is my fault. It was my fault. I rolled my car, I let myself skip classes and give up, I got the piercing even though I knew I wasn’t supposed to. These are my fault. The book ‘On Course’ states, “The essence of personal responsibility is responding wisely to life’s opportunities and challenges, rather than waiting passively for luck or other people to make the choices for us” (31). This quote resonated with me more than anything. I sat there for the longest time waiting for luck, cursing God and wishes because I wanted a better life. It wasn’t until recently when I took life by the horn and decided that I would make the decisions. I picked up the pieces of my shattered life and put them back together. Maybe in a messy way, and maybe with bright pink glue, but I took control. I took responsibility. I feel like if you can’t take responsibility then you can’t really take control.

Chapter 2, page 35 question 2
