The painting alone tells a story itself.

Jacqueline's poem Gifted delivers an important message about literacy. As a successful writer/ author, she shows her audience that growing up, school teachers often compared her to her sister...which left her feeling inadequate ...but even with these intimidating thoughts, Jacqueline aspired to be who she is today... she wrote because she liked to, not because she had to... and even when the words "twisted and twirled" across the pages... she was able to "catch words." Jacqueline's story is inspirational to young writers.

(p. 35).
(sofa = blanket cloud)

"My aunt makes food on the cooking fire (p. 39) .. (stove = cooking fire)

"TV Machine (p. 39) ... it's a machine to Kek because they are not as common in his home country.

"It's eating my dishes! I cry./ Please make it stop!/ Hannah lifts the top of the machine....(p.98)
^ this leads into the chapter "Not-Smart Boy" ....
Kek used the washing machine to wash dishes... and then calls himself not-smart after feeling guilty for his mistake.

Hannah even admits - "Woah. I think this is what they call/ a problem with translation."

Katherine subtly reminds the teachers reading this book that we need to be conscious of the barriers ENL students must overcome.

Literal interpretations like Kek's just mean that the student is using prior knowledge and experiences to make their way in the world ...they are building literacy... provide visuals, be descriptive... and never assume!

The new slang terms that appear in this book remind me of Kek's struggles with our language... (m-chat, boot stick, FeedLink, Onfeed, oneiric culture, lesions, youch, lenticels, birching....) these words are from a list I kept while reading...

While I may not have been able to make meaning of these words right away (foreign language)... eventually, using the right context clues, sometimes just reading on ... and a little bit of googling... I was able to make sense...

The literacy message that you can derive from this scenario is that we have to remember what the "learning to read" process is like for our students.

* One word that particularly grabbed my attention: 'lesion.' ..

It took a few mentions to understand what this was or what it looked like...

lesion | ˈlēZHən |

noun chiefly Medicine

a region in an organ or tissue which has suffered damage through injury or disease, such as a wound, ulcer, abscess, or tumor.

Reading on I discovered that lesions became a "trending" thing to have... (p. 96)

"Lesions were hip now." (p. 147)

... So much of a trend that Quendy eventually covers herself with them... like tattoos

M.T. writes about the characters losing hair and skin ... clearly an effect of the Feedware/ environmental changes (artificial sun, CloudsTM, no real forests...oxygen industry)... so it's like they took something bad that was happening to them and slapped a bandaid on it by "making it cool." (lipstick on a pig)

This also reminded me of Wall-E when they invite the ship's guests to "Try blue...it's the new red."

Social Media can really control your mind if you let it!
