<title>Word Work When vowels are with r in words, you blend the vowel sound with r(car, her, fir, corn, hurt)1Working at the Pocket Board tell the children &quot;I am going to be&amp;nbsp;talking about vowels and the letter r in words. Write the word car on the chart.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; 2 Here is a word you know. &quot;Yes, it&#39;s CAR&quot; What part of the word says ar?&quot; Students respond. 3Write ar at the top left side of the chart paper to form a column. What are other examples of words that have&amp;nbsp; ar. (Use as a word wall) If children offer other examples of words that have other vowels, recognize they are getting the idea and start another column. Example of language response &quot;First does have a vowel with an r,&amp;nbsp; but its not ar, I&#39;ll write it Demonstrate staring another column. What is the vowel before the r (Children respond) &amp;nbsp; So I will put first in another column with ir at the top. &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; 4 Go back to generate more examples for ar, but then more to another category</title>

<title>5. Explain that sometimes it is hard to hear the difference in vowel sounds when they are right before the r. Introduce the or column to the children by writingthe word for. Suggested language Here is another word you know that has a vowel with r. Say for (Children respond) Now say car (Children respond )Can you hear a little bit of difference?6 Discuss the difference with the children, but caution that you can&#39;t always hear the difference when there is a vowel with r. Sometimes you have to thinkabout howthe word looks or connect it with other words.7. Place or at the top of the column and generate examples that have or8. Continue to generate examples for each column, adding er and ur (You may want to continue this lesson over 2 or more days.9 Summarize the lesson by stating the principle orally. Suggested language &quot; So today you see that you blend the vowel sound with r in some words.10. Show the children how to play the word grid game. The first player rolls a die, looks for a word on his grid that contains the same word part shown on the die, reads the word aloud, and crosses the word out on the sheet. Then the next player takes a turn. In pairs or threes, the children play the Word Grid Game.</title>

<title>Have the children share a word from the grid to add to the class chart. Add one or two examples for each category to the word wall(or highlight words thatare already there)Ask children what they noticed about words. Encourage comments like these: AR can be at the beginning of the word or after the first letter or at the end.Torn and born rhyme. You can make car into cart by add a t at the end - like go-cart. There&#39;s an er in Peter&#39;s name.</title>
