Q3A (global): Some people say that when learning something, it is important to enjoy the process and not be overly concerned about the results. Do you agree? RASHID & DYLAN

I agree to some extent it is important to enjoy the process because we need to understand what we are learning in the first place. (stand)
When we focus on the process more than the results, we learn values such as perseverance because we pick ourselves up each time we fail again and again. (point)
For example, I recently learned to pick up the guitar when I did not even know how to read a single musical note. However, I stuck to it and now i can read an entire musical score. (example)
So, this experience taught me that focusing on the learning process and the techniques allows one to learn faster and become more successful. (explain)
Furthermore, we will be more happier as we learn to enjoy the fruits of our labour. (elaborate)

On the other hand, results will bring you places (counter-argument)
In Singapore, the education system is result oriented because our national exam results determine our education pathways. (example)
We also face tremendous pressure from our parents to do well in school since our results can determine what kind of jobs we will get in the future. (elaborate)
As a working adult, results are also important to the company in order to promote him or fire him if he does not meet a certain target. (example)

In conclusion, I still feel that the learning process is more important than the results. (repeat stand)

The learning process is about facing your fears and building your self-confidence. (explain)

We learn more about ourselves along the process and this learning will stay with us for the rest of our lives. (elaborate)

Currently, the education system is trying to get us to enjoy the learning process by fewer tests and exams in school. (relate to current news / trend)
Hopefully, this trend will continue so that we experience the joy of learning and not worry too much about the end results. (personal opinion)

Q2B(personal): What do you think can be learned from outdoor activities like trekking or camping? CHANTAL

Firstly, we can unplug from technology and learn to appreciate nature. (point 1)
Trekking or camping are activities that we rarely get a chance to do so it would be a fun way to experience the outdoors. (explain)
Secondly, participating in such activities gives us to the opportunities to make new friends. (point 2)
With face to face conversations, we can improve on our social and communication skills (explain)
This way, we can widen our social circle and gain many new, long-lasting friendships. (elaborate)
Lastly, these physically-challenging activities teach us endurance and not to give up easily (point 3)
During my stint at the Sec 3 OBS Camp, I had to overcome my fear of heights during the rock-climbing session and persevered to scale to the peak of the rock wall. (personal example)
At first, I thought I could not make it but I remember feeling so proud of myself for accomplishing this feat. (elaborate)
Hence, i think these activities help build up my resilience and confidence to face challenges in life. (link)

I think taking a short walk at the nearby park everyday is good for teenagers. (point 1)
Sometimes, the stress from school and our personal problems can be really overwhelming. So, walking allows us to relieve some stress and protect our mental health. (explain)

We can even exercise or do a simple workout routine at the park to keep fit. (elaborate)
I think exercise is now more crucial than ever for the sake of our mental and physical well-being. With the current Covid-19 outbreak, it is good to keep moving instead if being cooped up at home and be on our gadgets all the time. This could lead to eye strain and even anxiety when we keep facing all the bad news online (point 2)
Alternatively, we can stay at home and read a book, watch a movie and even talk to our family members at home. (example)

We can do whatever we want to feel productive or to feel good about ourselves. (elaborate)

Personally, for me , I think this is an especially good time to bond and spend time with family as much as I can because we should always cherish them.

I think this statement is true to a large extent. (stand / point)
One example is the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Not many people know that he only started to learn Mandarin at the age of 32 years old. Instead of getting someone else to speak on his behalf, he chose to pick up the language and continuously improved on himself so that he became more confident in Mandarin. (example)
Hence, I do not think that age is an excuse to not learn something new. (link)

However, some people may not agree. (counter- argument)
This may be due to a lack of passion for learning that was instilled from a young age. (explain)
There are some who may be influenced by their peers to give up on learning altogether. (example)
Lastly, some may not have the proper information or awareness of the available resources to help further their learning. (example)

In conclusion, I think we are never too old to learn (repeat stand)
In Singapore, we have the Skillsfuture programme to help the elderly relearn , retrain or to pick up a new skill to enhance their lifelong learning experience (example)
This way, we will have a nation of lifelong learners with a positive attitude towards learning and adapting to progress as a country.

I see a woman swinging from a platform. I would like to take part in this activity because I have always liked taking risks and taking part in outdoor activities. To me, I do not want to live life without regrets so i want to try new things that test my limits. During my soccer training, i face risks daily as a goal keeper. If you do not know how to deflect a ball, you may injure your hand and fracture your wrists. I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I deflect a goal. Being a goalkeeper is huge responsibility because your teammates depend on you to prevent the opponent from scoring a goal. Hence, i do enjoy tasking risks and taking part in such activities.

I would like to participate in the activity because I am an adventurous person and I like to try out new things that i’ve never experienced before. In my opinion, I think life is about trying out new things and stepping out of our comfort zone. For me, I have never been in a sports cca before coming into GuangYang. In secondary one, when everyone had to select a cca, i chose cross country as my cca as I wanted a new experience. Being in cross country made me learn many things such as working with my teammates and improving my endurance every training session. It has made me step out of my comfort zone like watching my diet, training in the rain or under the sun and the tough trainings that i have to conquer every session. I’ve been constantly improving myself since then and got a medal during a national school game’s competition. So I feel that everyone should step out of their comfort zone and achieve something they want.

The video shows a girl swinging in the air freely and she swings with a strong grip. She then lands on a netting after that.I think that it would be a very interesting and exciting experience for me because I look forward to participating in such activities as i am an outdoor person. The thought of being in the air makes me feel a rush of adrenaline in me as it makes me feel excitement and a sense of achievement whenever I complete such activities. These activities not only make people experience something new, but it also helps people to learn a new life lesson. I once participated in a rock climbing competition when I was younger. Although I did not come in first place, the whole process taught me to not give up and peservere on until the very end. Even though my hands felt like they were about to give way, I told myself that I had to complete this. In conclusion, I encourage everyone to try outdoor activities at least once in their life so that we can learn different and meaningful lessons.

I see a lady swinging from a platform like a circus performer without strapping herself to any harness. She swings to and fro with a strong grip. After a few swings, she lets go and drops on a big safety net. I would participate in this activity because I have never done anything like this before and I would like to try because I want to step out from my comfort zone. I feel like if I try new things it will benefit me because I would be more exposed to new things and learning new things helps me to have new experiences. Trying new things also makes me feel more confident and lets me have a sense of accomplishment. Before going to Guangyang, I have never thought of joining a uniformed group especially red cross. I didn't have the patience and the memory to remember all the necessary skills that was taught. But I decided to try something that I thought I would never get to experience and I learnt a lot of new things like how to perform first aid and to lead others by example. I also learnt more about team work and team communication because it is important during competitions. Therefore, I think it is good to step out of our comfort zone and try something different.

I think that it will be an eye opening experience as this activity is not an activity where we can just do as and when we like. It is more of an outdoor activity where we need to prepare beforehand, like the gears, the safety equipment and so on. I also think that participating in this activity will let me come out of my comfort zone, as for me, I’m more of a couch potato and I’m a very lazy individual. However, I do like overcoming challenges. Also, I’m afraid of height, since young, so I think that by participating in this activity, it can allow me to overcome my fear and maybe, this may be my new interest: outdoor activities. This is why, by doing this activity, I can improve my lifestyle and face my fears, be it now, or in the future.

Personally, I have done something similar to the activityy shown in the video.

An outdoor activity I’ve participated in was frisbee.Last year, during my boarding period at Raffles Instituition, my group of friends and I will always play frisbee at the grass patch to exercise and to bond with one another over the course of 7 weeks. I enjoy playing frisbee as it creates fond memories that I can look back on. Frisbee benefits me as it makes you run around and makes you a better team player as it is a team game. However, frisbee is not commonly played because it requires ample space and people. On days where I play frisbee with my friends at Raffles, I wished there were more players so that we can have a more competitive match. If I have the chance to go back to Raffles,I will definitely invite more friends to play frisbee with us.

To encourage more people to join this game, I would first teach them the rules of the game and we can have a friendly match to get a better sense of the game. Besides teamwork, it trains our hand and eye coordination because you have to follow the direction of the frisbee and catch it at the same time. Hence, I would encourage everyone to pick up this sport because it is fun and challenging at the same time.

Camping ensures that we know how to survive in the wilderness as we are not usually exposed to nature because we are overly engrossed in our digital gadgets. Outdoor activities also train us to find our own food and acquire basic necessities and survival skills.

Once, I went on a camping trip.

One of the activity that I enjoy the most as a child is swimming as Swimming gives me a superb feeling being able to be submerged in water and it is really fun and social activity that I do with my cousins regularly as a child. Swimming as a social activity can be fun with many fun games that one can play in water. For example, my cousins and I would bring water guns or any water related toy to try to use them as weapons against each other. Another reason is because the element of competition it has, being able to challenge someone with physical strength and will is the most enjoyable thing you can do as a child. I remember I would try to challenge my cousin to a swimming competition every week. I would lose most of the times but the process of getting better and having the hope of beating him is a really enjoyable experience

Q2E Do you think competition takes the fun out of an activity? JHOON RHYUI

I do not think that competition takes the fun out of an activity. While activities played non-competitively can indeed be beneficial and fun, competition gives many players a goal and a reason for them to improve in an activity. Such an example can be Badminton where I played against my friend oncenon-competitively, and was certainly had fun and benefitted as we were be both having fun and gained more experience with Badminton at the end of the game. However, if there was competition, between us there would be a goal, such as if I was striving to Beat my friend in a game of Badminton. Naturally, with a goal, I would do much better and think more thoroughly how to surpass my friend, which would result in me improving my skills. This proves that competition does not take the fun out of an activity; it only adds to it, and even helps make it more intense and allows players to progress. However, if the competition in an activity is treated negatively, such as with a lack of sportsmanship to appreciate the game,, with cases such as the winner putting the loser down BY JEERING AT HIM OR MOCKING HIM or the loser attempting to cheat or frame the winner so as to seem superior. In these considerably rare cases, competition would indeed take the fun out of an activity.

Overall, I do believe that competition does not take the fun out of an activity and instead helps players find a reason to strive for excellence.

Q3A (global): Some people say that when learning something, it is important to enjoy the process and not be overly concerned about the results. Do you agree? JOVAN LEE

Yes i agree that when learning something it is essential to enjoy the the process, because when you enjoy the process the efficiency of learning that something is drastically increased. For example in the video i doubt that anyone will be able to master swinging from a platform like that in the video if they do not enjoy the process of doing so.I personally wouldn’t as it would be too scary. Worrying about the result instead of enjoying the process will actually hinder your results as ur brain is put under a lot of stress when you are overly concerned about the results. to enjoy doing something will also build up your confidence in that particular activity especially the one shown in the video you would need a whole lot of confidence to swing around like that, because one wrong move will land you in the hospital.

During my basketball training sessions, I enjoyed the training process a lot because I got to bond with my teammates instead of worrying about the score. We also learn to pick up teamwork skills since basketball is a team sport.

However, results may matter the most because no matter how much you enjoy the learning process, people will only look at the results to determine if you are a failure. No matter how much u train and practise, if you miss one basket, people will think that you are a lousy player.

At the end of the day, I still think process is more important because we have to enjoy learning and when we do so, the learning stays with us forever.

Q3B Do you agree with the view that high-risk activities increases our level of confidence? Why or why not? HARINI

I agree with the view that high risk activities increases our level of confidence . ‘Self confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings’ High risk activities helps us to step outside of our comfort zone . Stepping outside of our comfort zone is our first step to build confidence and thus if we are willing to participate in high risk activities it means that we are challenging ourselves which boosts our confidence level . Participating in high risk activities teaches us how to face new situations with courage and confidence .

However, other activities can help bring us out of our comfort zone as well. For example, when we first learn to cycle, we are slowly building our confidence in learning new things. For myself, I am in the badminton CCA. When i participate in competitions, i find that self-confidence is very important in order to face my opponents head-on. This is because I cannot display my fear or weakness on the court so that my opponent will not get the best of me.

Hence, I agree to a certain extent that high-risk activities bring about confidence. It does not matter what activity it is so long as it

i feel that even though Singapore is a small country, there are still a number of places and activities to make an enjoyable day for anyone. there are many things that can be done in singapore be it for those who are adventurous or for those who are more laid-back . thrill seekers can find joy in visiting places like the tree top walk or maybe even hike up singapore's infamous bukit timah hill. for those who just wants to enjoy the beauty of singapore they can visit the national art museums where they feature a lot of local artworks by our ancestors. although,if you are not looking to spend money , you can just take a relaxing walk along the coast to coast resevoirs in singapore . therefore , i do not agree that there are only a limited amount of things to do in singapore
However , some people might disagree with me, saying that Singapore has very little to offer compared to other countries. this is true to a certain extent as singapore has a limited amount of space therefore, this does not allow certain activities to take place . for example , sports like monster jam cannot take place in singapore as this country has not enough space to hold such big events . however , this still does not hide the fact that singapore has a vast range of activites and places that can be visited

SUN ZEKUN
i agree that high-risk activities increases our level of confidence as studies show that when most humans are facing a life risking problem there is a spike in their confidence and braveness as there thought of them accomplishing or surviving the activity. and when they do complete the activity they would always have the confidence to say "it isn't that hard"
However there are people who do not agree as there are people who are just to scared to do high risk activities its either because they failed before and they don't want to fail again or be cause they are just generally scared from watching other people do it. Its the fear that they have of the activity that is causing them not to have a increase in their confidence instead there are other thing they do to increase their confidence like conquering their own fears, its a small step but it still works. Conquering stage fright is a example when someone gets over their stage fright they will be come more confident when getting on stage in the future or in front of other people.
In conclusion everyone is different some people can turn the stress of the activities to confidence while there are people who can't.And each and everyone has a different of showing how they get more confident.

I personally think that there's a wide range of activities we can do in Singapore. However there are some limitations as to what we can do. For example, paragliding is a sought after sport in many countries. But Singapore does not offer that sport because of the space limitations we have here .

However there's still many other activities that people can embark on. There are still many sports that are available in Singapore. There are many trails in Singapore and trekking is a very popular sport. You can choose to explore Singapore's trail and might even find some of Singapore's hidden gems such as the World War II bunkers hidden in some of the trails in Singapore. These are experiences that may not be found in other countries and is definitely does not support the fact that there is a limited number of things that one can do in Singapore.

Cycling is another activity that we can do to view different parts of Singapore. It is also a good form of exercise it can help improve our stamina and various muscles in our bodies.

Therefore I feel that there are still many different activities that we can do in Singapore but have not yet been discovered. So it is good to keep an open mind and be willing to always try new things.

Q3D 'You are never too old to learn.' What do you think of this statement? YOGESH

I agree with this statement as there is no age limit in learning. However, when it comes to learning new skills physically the elderly will have a harder time coping due to weakened strength and limitations. With this being said, this should not put anyone down to pick up something new as with hard work and effort, success will come.

Even if you are old, you can head to the library and read up on books and newspapers on global affairs, the environment and much more. For those elderly who are more adventurous and would like to learn a new sport, Golf is a great sport to learn as it is very safe and is fun. One such example is our very own Team strong silvers! They are retired body Builders who still have a passion in exercising and keeping fit. Most of them are 70 years old yet they can outperform many people who are way younger than them! In your spare time it is best to learn something new or pick up a new hobby rather than idling at home.

Personally, during my spare time, i like to play chess. I learned to play chess from my mom and she would beat me every single time.
However, I have improved my game and beat her every now and then. Chess has trained my willpower and think of different ways and strategies of overcoming obstacles in life.

in conclusion, I still feel that we are never too old to learn as long we have the passion to pick up new skills and upgrade ourselves.
