Q1. Give a brief description of the artifact. What was the artifact used for?

The artifact has been in used trade by the people of South-East Asia even before the arrival of the Chinese and Indian traders. They exchanged spices such as cinnamon, cardamon, and cloves. After the Portuguese and the Dutch's arrival in Southeast Asia, the British came and took interest in the spice trade in Southeast Asia as they were establishing trading settlements and factories in India in 1612. The British traders worked for a trading company called British East India Company ( EIC ). The British were then competing against the Dutch's control on the monopoly of the spice trade. After the British gained control over the spice trade and made Singapore a trading port, traders from China, India, the Malay Archipelago and beyond came to trade one of those items were spices which were seen as a profitable item from the British.

1. Give a brief description of the artifact. What was the artifact used for?

The artifact is a East Javanese -style jewellery that was discovered in 1928 when British engineers were digging up Fort Canning to build a new reservoir. There is where they unearthed three items .Two are what that look like earrings and the third is a armlet. The square piece in the middle of the armlet bears details depicting the god representing time and destruction Kala in the Hindu -Javanese mythology. Kala is a protective symbol which traditionally adorns the top of main entrances of temples, and is still found in many parts of Indonesia. The armlet also has flexible chains, some of which were already broken when it was discovered. The earrings, each with a socket joint and wire hinge, are set with diamonds. These item are also known as 'Majaphit Gold' .This is because in the 14th century Singapore, which was then known as Temasek ,was under the political and cultural ambit of the East Java-based kingdom of Majapahit.

2.What does this artifact tells you about what Singapore was like before 1819?INFERENCE
The artifact tells me that Singapore before 1819 had political and cultural connections with the world as the this set of East-Javanese jewellery is from the 14th century when the East-Java based empire of Majapahit which reached its peak from 1350 to 1389.This evidence from 'recorded that the ornaments were lying just beneath the top of the pre-colonial soil strata, indicating their existence before the British arrived in 1819. 'This shows that Singapore had political and cultural connections before the Sir Stamford Raffles came to Singapore.

3.What would you say so?Provide an explanation of at least 30 words to support your inference.
This is because the golden armlet was found when evacuating Fort Canning Hill ,which was then known as Bukit Larangan,as the British was digging to build a reservoir. The armlet bears a repoussé plaque of the Javanese kala, a protective symbol which traditionally adorns the top of main entrances of temples, and is still found in many parts of Indonesia.Showing that there was political connections during the Majapahit Empire.

1)Give a brief description of the artefact. What was the artefact used for?
Instead of paper money, the people in China used these coins as currency. These ancient coins were usually made out of copper, iron, gold and silver, with different weight, shapes and marks.

2)What does this artefact tell you about what Singapore was like before 1819?
The artefact tells me that in the 14th to 15th centuries, these coins were used between Singapore and China as a form of currency and as a form of payment in Singapore, a form of economic activity.

3)Why would you say so? Provide an explanation of atleast 30 words to support your inference
I would day this as during the 14th to 15th century, China and Singapore had an economic connection, and in order to be able to do that, they had to have the same kind of currency. Therefore, they had to use these kinds of chinese coins.

It was blown up in 1843 to widen the mouth of the river.
