The Fear of Human Immortality and What Follows It

Immortality; the ability to live forever, eternal life. As human civilization advances, we reach further into the sky, in attempt, to mimic the powers that were not originally bestowed upon us or meant for us. This relentless pursuit of advancement consistently reaps the unsettling question: what comes next? Personally, I fear the next monumental innovation could be the creation of human immortality. While, on paper, immortality, eternal life, may seem like a blessing, I believe it to be a curse.

The image above depicts what I believe to be the grim truth of Human Immortality. This creature, once human, was gifted eternal life and is now suffering the consequences, as a monster. This lonely void-like husk of a human, stripped of all humanity, including its emotion, sensory, cognition, and even its original physical makeup. After millenniums of endlessly roaming the Earth, devoid of any and all purpose, the creature awaits its demise that will never come.

What terrifies humans the most about this creature is its void-like and unknown state of existence. Humans naturally fear the unknown and what comes next, thus this monster, with its eternal and unfathomable existence, horrifies all who encounter it.

The "Existence" of Extraterrestrial Beings

E.T. isn't necessarily portrayed as a monster within the film but rather a gentle alien who befriends a boy named Elliot and seeks his help to return home; to others watching from the comforts of their home or the cinema, this film is truly terrifying. When I watched this film for the first time at a very young age I wasn't just extremely scared but I was definitely scarred, and this image of this "monster" was implemented into my brain. In addition, my grandma thought it would be a great idea to purchase me a stuffed version of this creature and put it in my closet facing my bed. I laid awake most nights terrified at the thought that extraterrestrial beings could just show up on this earth we call home.

Extraterrestrial life, or colloquially aliens, is life which doesn't originate from earth and no extraterrestrial life has yet been conclusively detected, but this doesn't mean there is nothing out there within the depths of space. Various speculations about this topic have been shared and so called "sightings" of extraterrestrial beings have been photographed and videotaped. There is no true conclusion about this topic but it's still hard to believe with all of the technological advancements and resources we have that we haven't reached a point in which we can positively say if extraterrestrial life is real or not.

The Chimera was a monster from Greek mythology. It was a female monster part lion, goat, snake, and dragon. It was not only the Chimera's appearance that frightened people but the way she terrorized and destroyed. With two monster parents Typhoeus and Echidna it is no wonder the Chimera was so horrifying. The Chimera was from Lycia where it devastated the land with its fire breath. The Greek hero Bellerophon the son of the sea god Posiedon. Bellerophon is tasked by King Iobates of Lycia to kill the Chimera that is ruining his city. Bellerophon with the help of his flying horse Pegasus flew above Chimera shooting arrows into its back weakening her until finally Bellerophon attached lead to his spear and flew close to the Chimera and stabbed it in the throat. The lead melted suffocating the Chimera until it was dead. It is speculated by modern historians that the Chimera was a metaphor for all the volcanos in Lycia.

Dinosaurs were incredible creatures that ruled the Earth for millions of years, during the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. When I was a kid, I loved watching Jurassic Park and wondered what the world would be like if dinosaurs were still around today. With how quickly technology is advancing, I imagined that someday someone might find a way to bring them back.

But thinking about it more, I realized that dinosaurs could be more like monsters in our modern world. Picture huge, powerful creatures roaming through our cities. Their primal instincts and sheer power could wreak havoc on our world. A cityscape where colossal predators roam freely, their monstrous forms disrupting daily life and posing grave dangers to human safety. They could be dangerous, causing chaos and endangering people. Our world might not be ready for such giant, unpredictable animals. While it's exciting to think about, it's also important to consider how these ancient creatures could pose serious risks if they were ever brought back.

Medusa who was once a beautiful woman that fell from the graces of all the gods in Olympus. Her story is a tragic one being assaulted by Poseiden in Athenas temple where she seeked refuge only later to be punished by all the god for something that was out of her control. And for that she was turned into a vile creature that could turn people into stone just by looking at her. As a young girl reading about this made me realize that some people don't care to get to know the other side of a story because Medusa was not a bad person she did nothing wrong she was just accused of something that was out of her control and she had no power to stop it. So not all monsters are bad they are just misunderstood by people who don't want to know the truth.

A werewolf is a human that transforms into a monster/creature willingly or by a curse at night on a full moon and then turns back into a human during the day. Werewolves are often mythical creatures seen in TV shows like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, etc. These creatures eat people and animals at night and turn into what you can call savages. Myths of werewolves fall back to prehistoric times in ancient Greece and Rome. People often believed in werewolves to be caused my magic or herbs. Although werewolves are seen as vicious, dangerous, and ruthless, they are loyal and respect those that they trust. I have always been fascinated by the concepts of werewolves from watching TV shows that represented them but I never thought to learn more about the mythical creatures until now.

In Greek mythology, Sirens are said to have the head of a beautiful woman with the body of a bird. Some stories describe Sirens more as mermaids with both fish and woman features. Siren were originally claimed to be friends of the goddess Persephone, who failed to protect her from being abducted by Hades. As punishment, they were turned into monster in other words Sirens. Siren use their captivating voice in the middle of the ocean to lure sailors to their death, most definitely eating the sailors. Sirens are very dangerous creatures that uses their beautiful features for their own benefit showing no mercy.

What makes the creature/creatures in this photo so monstrous? I think what makes this seem so monstrous is how non-human it is. It is a reptile with 3 separate heads! I believe that the scary appeal from this creature comes from the fact that it is not typically normal on an animal to have more than 1 head. This monster is considered a monster in its' story because of how dangerous and life threatening the monster poses as. Humans tend to fear life threatening things, and this is why they would probably prefer to ignore them rather than seek them.

However, in the movie his job is to be a "scarer"- to scare kids in order to harvest their screams and fuel the monster world. Despite him being huge and intimidating with a loud roar, the movie reveals that he is protective and caring for those around him. I think this monster being scary stems from the idea that he looks drastically different than people so it creates fear.

The character of Grendel from the story of Beowulf frightened many readers, including myself. This story was based on the Anglo-Saxon period. Grendel is a antagonist in the movie/book; a monster who shares the attributes of both a human and an animal and attacks people at night when everyone is asleep or places where there's music. No doubt AI did a wonderful job by presenting a creature like this on the big screen. Instead of Grendel being a hairy monster in the books, he was bare skinned in the movie which disgusted me. Grendel's claws could sweep up many at once which brought about a sense of danger warnings in everyone's (people in the Anglo- Saxon time) minds. The reason the monster does this is because he is jealous of humans who can spend their time in the day, where the light is present but he can only come out at night. He is miserable and therefore wishes all humans to be dead. While many look at Grendel as a powerful and savage character, I purely look at it with fear. If I was the individual who knew Grendel existed, there would be sleepless nights. I believe this monster wanted to control everyone's minds and he was successful doing that. His trauma had lead him to kill. he face of Grendel- his beard like face, his claws and his sharp teeth made me uneasy. The evil soul he became caused my sleepless nights when watching this movie and when reading the book. Humans would naturally be scared of a creature knowing they could be the next victims of death. He roamed around at night murdering people for 12 years. Imagine the horrific events people had to go through every night just knowing their passing was soon upon them. Grendel was so powerful that no one could anything to stop him. Beowulf, a character in the story, was driven to end this fright in people's minds. He showed courage like no one could and killed Grendel with his bare hands. Beowulf cut of Grendel's arm from his shoulder which made Grendel weak and finally died towards the end of the story.

Often, we think of monsters as physical entities, but is it their physical appearance that makes them a monster, or is it what they represent? I see monsters as an over-exaggeration of a negative emotion or piece of our identities. They're desires/ideas/beliefs that we all may have a little piece of, but monsters' sole identity represents one or many of these things. Jabba the Hutt is a fictional monster that portrays greed and vengeance. We have decided that greed and vengeance might look like a big, ugly worm, but his hideous physical appearance is not what makes him a monster.

When they chase after you suspenseful music starts playing and the screen has a red hue to capture the creature's vibe. What makes this monster more scary is that they basically suck the energy and health out of you. In the game when link (the protagonist) comes within radius of these creatures they immediate try to attack him. If the gloom hands catch him they start taking away the hearts (lifes) of link. I would consider this as a monster due to it being scary looking and being not friendly.

- Sky Pearce

The Green Goblin is one of Spider-Man’s most notorious villains. Norman Osborn, who becomes the Green Goblin, undergoes a transformation after using a serum that boosts his strength and intelligence but also drives him mad. Dressed in a flashy green suit, he uses high-tech gadgets like a glider and pumpkin-shaped bombs to cause chaos. His rivalry against Spider-Man is deeply personal, often targeting those close to him, which adds a layer of intensity to their conflicts. I love the Green Goblin because he’s such a compelling character in the Spider-Man movie, which makes him stand out as one of my favorite monsters.

Freddy Krueger is a dream demon from A Nightmare on Elm Street film series. He essentially is the spirit of a child killer who was killed by his parents. Freddy can enter the dream world of children (specifically teenagers) who live on Elm Street. The people that he haunts die in the real world as well. People fear Freddy because of his appearance, having a burnt, leathery face and knife hands. His inability to be killed in the dream world is another reason he is feared. The only way to potentially slow him down is by standing up to him in the human world showing no fear but most don't make it to do so.

The Wendigo is a creature from Algonquian folklore. I chose it because it provides a metaphor for aspects of human nature, particularly greed and moral decay. Described as a gaunt, skeletal being with an insatiable hunger, the Wendigo represents the extreme consequences of consuming human flesh, symbolizing the destructive power of unchecked desires. Its craving and transformation from human to monster through cannibalism reflect how excessive greed and selfishness can break down someone's humanity and lead to moral corruption. This mythical creature captures the essence of how extreme behaviors and ethical crimes can transform people into something monstrous, and highlights the dangers of allowing your desires to go unchecked.

In comparison, human nature can mirror the Wendigo's symbolism through the destructive potential of greed and isolation. It's endless hunger showcases moral failure and dehumanization, real greed and ethical compromises can lead to a loss of integrity and humanity. Moreover, the Wendigo's association with isolation and madness emphasizes the psychological impact of extreme stress and seclusion, which can drive people to irrational and harmful actions. This myth serves as a cautionary tale, revealing how human nature, when pushed to its limits by unchecked impulses and isolation, can devolve into a state of moral and psychological disintegration.

-Chelsea Burns

Killer Croc, a prominent villain in the Batman universe, is characterized by his grotesque reptilian appearance and immense strength. Croc was born a human named Waylon Jones whose physical deformities and traumatic upbringing drive his criminal acts and deeply rooted anger. Killer Croc's character illustrates isolation and societal rejection, as his monstrous exterior mirrors his internal thoughts and isolation from the rest of the world. Croc often lives in the sewers to try and escape from the cruelty of humanity and run from his traumatic past. In the comics, Batman is the only human to call Croc by his real name Waylon displaying that Batman sees Croc for what he truly is a misguided figure. This complexity makes him a tragic figure who embodies the themes of alienation and the struggle between humanity and monstrosity, adding depth to his role as an antagonist.

Today, sirens are often described as beautiful mermaids whose beauty and sexuality lure men to their deaths. However, ancient Greeks saw them in a different light. In Greek mythology, Sirens were half-woman, half-bird creatures that lured sailors to their deaths with songs. It was said that sirens lived on rocky islands in areas such as the western sea or the rocks of Scylla. They were said to be the daughters of the sea god Phorcys or the river god Ashelous. Similar to what is believed currently about sirens, they possess beautiful singing voices. The most popular song, "Siren's Song", is the song used to lure sailors in. The song consists of tempting lyrics that ironically only work on men. A siren's voice can also be used as a weapon, capable of shocking or outright killing anyone or anything that threatens them. They also have supernatural speed, which, as you can imagine would come in handy. Sirens also have weaknesses, for example, sirens are known as attention seekers. When Odysseus managed to survive their captivating song, and then threw themselves into the water surrounding their island, out of frustration.

La Llorona is a myth about a vengeful ghost that haunts bodies of water. It is said that she mourns the death of her drowned children and if you hear her cries, misfortune will befall you. In other renditions of the myth, she wanders around and her cries lure men to their deaths. The origin of this story comes from a woman, who in a fit of rage, drowned her children when she discovered her husband was unfaithful.

Created as part of a paranormal image editing contest, Slenderman is depicted as a tall, thin figure wearing a black suit and having a featureless face. He is often associated with unsettling themes of stalking, abduction, and psychological horror. The character has had a significant impact on popular culture, inspiring video games, movies, and even a dedicated following. However, Slenderman's influence also sparked real-life incidents, notably the tragic 2014 stabbing case in Wisconsin, where two girls attacked a classmate in an attempt to impress Slenderman, highlighting the complex relationship between fictional horror and reality.

On the outside, I would agree that he is scary, but on the inside, I don’t believe him to be scary at all. The more his character was portrayed the more the audience was able to understand him. I don’t think it’s how you look that makes you classified as “scary” but more how you act and behave that would make someone or something scary. For example, instead of Edward using his scissorhands for something bad, he used them to trim people’s hair and created sculptures out of bushes.

In Spider-Man 3 we see Flint Marko become Sandman when he falls into a pit of sand and a turbine activates. Flint Marko is a criminal and steals to raise his sick daughter. Before he became Sandman one can say he was already a monster because of all the crimes he committed, but by the end, we realize his wrongdoings were all because of desperation. Flint believes what he is doing is okay because he is doing it for good reasons. "I didn't choose to be this. The only thing left of me now... is my daughter".

Imagine a giant with hundreds of snake heads, each breathing fire, and a lower body made entirely of writhing vipers. He's terrifying not just because of how he looks, but because he embodies raw, unstoppable chaos; immaculate power that the gods feared him. Typhon isn't just a monster because he's violent or powerful; he's monstrous because he's something we can't control or predict, like a force of nature that can break apart everything familiar. That's the real fear Typhon brings a reminder of what's beyond human strength and understanding.
