⤷How others shape my identity: I believe that we are a mix of the people we’re around the most, I feel like we are what and who we love and hate, we learn something from every person that comes in our life, everyone has an impact in our identity, even if it’s small.

⤷I personally believe that I’m not appropriating the French culture, because when I bought it, I was in Avignon learning about the origins, about the culture, language and religion. However, I think that my family doesn’t really care about the history behind it, they just care that’s from France, but I don’t think that’s cultural appropriation, they appreciate it ig.

⤷I’m not sure about what’s the culture of origin, but it’s probably from cello-Ligurian people.

𝜗𝜚 ~Migration and Cultural Expressions.ᐟ

⤷Personally, when I hear the word “home”, I think about comfort, warmth, and a sense of belonging. It also makes me think about familiarity and security, as well as change. When people migrate, home gets a way deeper meaning, because it becomes more than just a place, it becomes a collection of memories, a feeling. Home is a place where you feel safe, understood, and connected to your past and present. Home sometimes isn’t a physical space, sometimes it’s the memories, the people, or even the sense of connection.

⤷I believe art plays a very important role in how we understand other cultures at home, it kinda serves as a bridge that takes us to the other side of values and traditions that are most likely different from ours, but at the end of the day, they’re also deeply human. People can “define” their culture, values, of feelings through a painting, a song and for example, here in Mexico, even a piece of embroidered fabric. I believe that art is powerful enough to make us feel like something’s familiar, even the unfamiliar, and factors like migration transform art. It helps us remember that “home” isn’t just where we are, it’s also where our loved ones are, and how their life’s trajectories modify our knowledge of the world we share.

⤷When we look at different cultural expressions, for example art, dance, music or traditions, we get a peek on how different communities wee the world. This helps us understand their values, problems, and it’s part of their identity. By ENGAGING with artists from various different backgrounds, I learned how their cultures shape their art and what messages they’re trying to share with the rest of the world. This way is easier for us to validate the diversity in artistic expressions and understand the different needs, inspirations and messages behind these creations, this also allows us to support each other in a more “meaningful” way by creating a more connected and inclusive artistic environment and community.

⤷Talking with different artists and creators about current issues gave me a vision into the problems that they face daily inside of their communities. These artists often highlight important social, political and even environmental issues through their art, these helped me saw both similarities and differences between my situations and theirs. When I understood their perspectives, I became more aware of global issues and how different they affect us based on our communities, which lead me to become more empathic and informed. Plus, learning creative ways to approach global issues inspires me to try and think “outside of the box” and find more creative ways to address the problems in my own cultural context.
