Julie gets captured by the Nazis. Julie has been tortured for weeks. Maddie is in hiding on a farm. They finally come back together for one last time but not in the way they want to. Julie is being sent away to a concentration camp. Maddie sees that Nazis are about to beat her so she decides to shoot and kill Julie so she will be out of her misery.

This quote is a smile that compares wasps to German fighters. This comparison shows how the flighters look like wasps and that it can be scary.

This quote helps the reader paint a picture in their head about what the prisoner looked like and how they were treated.

It also has amazing character development throughout the story as well. The book also made you wanna keep turning the pages of how good the plot is. Having the 2 different characters points of view also made the book amazing because you wanted to know more about their view. It also made you wanna know how they will connect or maybe come together at some point as well.

This quote shows diction by connotation. It has one French word in the whole sentence so you can understand and connect to the book more. Being connected to the book help you understand the book more because this book is place in France and Germany so there will be french an german word through the book.

Some of the challenges are like women not being able to fly and having to deal with the Nazis. “Julie was next. Suddenly she laughed wildly and gave a shaking yell, her voice high and desperate. ‘KISS ME, HARDY! Kiss me, QUICK!’ Turned her face away from me to make it easier. And I shot her. I saw her body’s flinch – the blows knocked her head aside as though she’d been thumped in the face. Then she was gone. Gone.”( Wein, 281). This quote helps shows how it is character vs society because even though they are best friends, Maddie ends up killing Julie. She does this because she doesn’t want her to go to a concentration camp and be tortured by the Nazi. Maddie had to make this quick minded decision because of society and how the Nazi are treating people.

For example, Julie risked being a spy to try charm the Nazi to giving important information. Being a spy is basically risking your whole entire life. “‘They chain you if they think you are dangerous. The girl whose arms were tied behind her, did you see her? She wasn’t dangerous, she was a – collaboratrice, collaborator … Better off dead, that one. Did you see her, even lying in the road last night, sweet-talking the guards in German? Because her arms were bound, someone would have had to help her, on the way to wherever they were taking us – feed her, help her drink. She would have had to offer favours to the guards to get them to do it. None of us would have done it.”(Wein, 285). This quote help shows the theme because Julie was doing her job and risking her life to try and benefit other people. She is doing the job that one one wants to do. She rather risks it all than not do anything to help. She uses invisible ink in her scarf to leave messages to her boss.
