Flygirl is about a young woman named Ida Mae Jones that lives in Slidell, Louisiana with her brothers Abel, Thomas, and mother. Her grandfather also lives with her. Ida Mae wants to become a pilot like her father that died. She takes the test to get her license but does not pass because she is a woman. Her brother Thomas enlists for World War II and Ida Mae decides that she wants to aid in the war like her brother. She then applies for the Women Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) program. She does not have a pilot license and decides to use her fathers by replacing the picture. Since Ida Mae is fair skinned, she pretends to be a white woman in order to get accepted to the program. She gets accepted to the WASP program and has to travel to Sweetwater, Texas were she is going to have to leave her family. When she is in the WASP program she makes friends Patsy Kake and Lily Lowenstein. Through the program she has to be careful to hide her identity. She also face issues because of her gender.

In my art it shows the perspective of Ida Mae Jones. The art piece is a reflection of Ida Mae. She is a black woman that is passing as a white woman and is struggles within herself. She wants to be a pilot for the Women Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) program but has to give up her identity. The art piece illustrates how she is one woman but is facing two separate identities. In her identity as a white woman she is able to have more privileges but at the same time she has to be careful that no one discovers her secret. In her identity as a black woman she is not able to be herself and has to suffer with the guilt of lying to her friends. Ida Mae has to stay away from her family which causes a strain on their relationship. The artwork also shows the issue of the experience of racial segregation during the 1940's.
