He is mad because he is lashing out whether that be with his parents or friends. In the beginning he is upset with his mother for marrying his uncle and lashes out because they did not grieve as long as him. He also gets mad at his friends for visiting him and questions why they are really here multiple times. He also calls Polonius a fishmonger. He is angry at King Claudius for killing his father.

I think Hamlet is mad because of his conversation with polonius and his friends. In his interaction with polonius he calls him a fish monger, doesn’t remember that his daughter is Ophelia, and goes on a crazy rant about the book he entered reading upside down. In his conversation with his friends, sent by the king to spy on him, he compares Denmark to prison. He also seems to already know they were sent to spy on him.

Hamlet is not mad in the story. From the end of the first act it is said that he is put on an “antic disposition” to seem crazy which can explain his actions in the second act. Hamlet is simply trying to deceive others into thinking he is crazy. There are many possible benefits of seeming crazy to his peers. Regardless of his actions he is able to reason soundly such as when he was able to discover his friends motives quickly.
