This genre is a journal entry from the perspective of one of the main characters, Ellen Rosen. Ellen is a 10-year-old, Danish, girl who lived with her family during the German occupation of Denmark. The Rosen family is Jewish and had no choice but to hide from the German soldiers if they wanted to survive. Ellen was sent to live with her best friend, Annemarie Johansen, and had to pretend to be part of her family while her mom and dad were in hiding. Towards the end of the novel, Ellen was reunited with her parents and, with the help of the Johansen’s, was able to escape from Denmark to freedom in Sweden.

This journal entry is from Ellen, the day her and her family arrived in Sweden. It highlights her experience, her emotions during that terrifying time, her current fears of what her future holds and what her new life will be like in Sweden. This entry demonstrates historical empathy because it helps readers understand how Ellen was feeling during the time and how her experiences influenced her newly developed fears and emotions.
