The state government has Limited the number of persons attending indoor events 75 ,given the spread of the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 Or severe acute, respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
A pandemic review meeting chaired by chief minister ' PINARAYI VIJAYAN' here on Tuesday also decided to restrict the number of persons attending an outdoor event to 150. The restrictions will apply to marriage, burials and social and political events. The government also decided to step up vigil for flu symptoms at airports.
The government has so far counted 181 omicron cases in Kerala.

Scientists in France have identified a new strain of coronavirus with more mutations than the Omicron variant. The emergence of the new variant, which probably originated in Cameroon, as per the study, harbours both substitutions N501Y and E484K in the spike protein. At least 12 cases of the new variant have been reported near Marseilles, and has been linked to travel to the African country Cameroon.

Around 400-500 protesters belonging to Surjit Singh Phool’s Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Krantikari group sat on the flyover near village Piareana in the Ghall Khurd tehsil of Ferozepur district.

The BKU Krantikari (Phool) is part of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which spearhead the yearlong protests against the now repealed farm laws at the borders of Delhi. It occupies a position to the far left of the political spectrum that the SKM straddles.

The BKU Krantikari is active in 11 districts of Punjab with a sizeable presence in seven districts, nine of which are in the Malwa region, and two in Majha. The union claims to have 25,000-30,000 members across the state.

Why were the farmers protesting ?

According to Baldev Singh Zira, general secretary of the BKU Krantikari , the farmers were sitting on a dharna at three places on Wednesday — on this particular flyover; in Harika with the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (PKMSC); and in Kulgarhi.

The intention was to stop BJP supporters from reaching the venue of a planned rally that the Prime Minister was scheduled to address in Ferozepur. The rally was ultimately cancelled due to bad weather and rain.

Units of the union were also protesting in their respective district headquarters against the PM’s planned rally.
According to Zira "They were not aware about the PM's road trip at all."

Kerala's health department issued some guidelines after monitoring the omicron spread in kerala. One of them is that, after founding that the highly contagious OMICRON variant was mostly dectected in air travellers from foreign countries, On friday it was decided to make it compulsory for all international passengers coming in the state to stay SEVEN DAYS QUARANTINE.
Those people who became negative should stay in home quarantine for 14 days. After the completion of 7 days , on the eighth day there will a RTPCR test. If the test result shows negative then the person should stay another 1week for observation.

FIR filed against 150 unidentified people in Ferozepur for blocking PM Modi's convoy

Punjab police has registered an FIR against 150 unidentified people in a case related to the blocking of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy in Ferozepur earlier this week, where he was on his way to address a public rally.

The FIR has been registered against the accused under Section 283 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to law, whoever, by doing any act, or by omitting to take order with any property in his possession or under his charge, causes danger, obstruction or injury to any person in any public way or public line of navigation, shall be punished with a fine which may extend to Rs 200.

Meanwhile, a central team probing the "serious lapses" in PM Modi's security during his Ferozepur visit reached here on Friday. The Punjab government, on the other hand, submitted a report to the central government saying an FIR has been lodged in the matter.

According to sources, the three-member committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday, is seeking details about the sequence of events that unfolded during the PM's visit on January 5.

The Central team visited the Pyarayana flyover near Ferozepur in the morning amid foggy conditions and interacted with senior Punjab Police and civil administration officials. The panel is led by Sudhir Kumar Saxena, Secretary (Security), Cabinet Secretariat, and has Balbir Singh, Joint Director of the Intelligence Bureau; and S Suresh, IG, Special Protection Group as two other members.

Steady rise in new COVID-19 cases

A slow but steady rise in New covid-19 cases including a marginal increase in hospitalization (5%) and ICU admissions (8%) , is seen in the state now is comparison to the previous week even as many clinicians maintained that most of the patients are mild cases.
Public Health experts maintain cautious optimism that given the high background vaccination rate in the state, hospitalization would not surge.
Yet they warn that there is no room for complacency and appeal to the people to stay away from crowded places and to wear a good quality and well fitted mask to prevent themselves from getting infected.
The state reported 5,296 new cases of covid-19 on Friday when 64,577 samples were tested in the past 24 hours the test positivity rate has risen to 8.2 %.

Twenty-five more cases of COVID-19 were confirmed as due to the Omicron virus variant, taking the total number of Omicron cases detected in the state so far to 305.

Inflation skyrockets in Sri Lanka; food prices at record high

Sri Lanka’s benchmark inflation rate, measured by the National Consumer Price Index, accelerated to 14 per cent in December 2021, up from 11.1 per cent, the government statistics office said on Saturday, amidst a severe a foreign exchange crisis.
This was for the second consecutive month after inflation recorded double digit growth for the first time in November since the index came to be compiled from 2014.
Food prices jumped 6.3 per cent while non-food prices rose 1.3 per cent in December, according to the National Consumer Price Index.

KHAMAN SELLER FROM SURAT GETS PETA AWARD FOR SAVING BIRDS FROM KITE STRING

SURAT - Khaman ( Snack) seller from Gujarat's surat has been given an award by PETA India for his initiative to dissuade people from using manja or nylon string this saving the lives of many birds.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals ( PETA India) said in a release the Chetan Patel had offered 1kg of Khaman in exchange of 1 kg of discarded manja after Uttarayan festival celebrated on January 14.

NEW DELHI : India ushered in its 73rd Republic Day on Wednesday in the shadow of Covid-19 pandemic with an imposing display of its military strength and rich cultural diversity during a 90-minute parade that included soldiers on horseback, elite commandoes, tanks, infantry combat vehicles, missiles and artillery guns, with fighter jets roaring across the sky in the grand finale.

"On Republic Day, we recall the great women and men who worked towards the making of our constitution. We also reiterate our commitment to fulfill their dreams for our nation," the PM tweeted.

india hockey great and Olympic gold medalist Charanjit Singh dies

indian hockey great Charanjit Singh, who captained the Olympic team that won the gold in 1964 in Tokyo, died due to age-related complications in Una, Himachal Pradesh.
Charanjit was born on 22nd November 1930 at Mairi village in Una district of the State. An alumnus of Col. Brown Cambridge School, Dehra Dun, and Punjab University, he was also a part of the team that won the silver medal at the Rome Olympics in 1960.
After retiring from hockey, Charanjit Singh worked as Director of Department of Physical Education at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

Sirpi Balasubramaniam: Padma Shri apt for two-time Sahitya Akademi Award winner

COIMBATORE : Dr Sirpi Balasubramaniam (86), a renowned Tamil writer-cum-poet, was elated after receiving Padma Shri Award. Balasubramaniam is from Aathu Pollachi village near Pollachi. He has won Sahitya Akademi award twice and is a former Head of the Department of Tamil, Bharathiar University. He has penned around 130 books, including poetry collection Muganthu Theera Kadal and Senganthal, essays on various topics and has translated around 20 books.

2.35 Lakh New Covid Cases In India, Positivity Falls From 15.8% To 13.39%

ARIF BELIEVES INDIA CAN BECOME SKIING HUB IN NEXT 4 - 5 YEARS

In November last year, Arif Mohammed Khan had become the first alipine skier from the country to win a quota for the Winter Olympics by accumulating requisite FIS (International Ski Federation) points. Arif, who hails from Tangmarg of Baramulla district ( Jammu and Kashmir), had aachieved the Qualification in the final FIS Qualification held in Dubai.

Five militants killed in two Kashmir encounters

Five militants, including Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) 'top commander' and the son of the house owner where the militants were hiding, were killed in two separate anti-militancy operations by the police and the Army on Sunday.

“Four terrorists were killed in Pulwama's Naira area. The hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately on the joint search parties (on Saturday evening),” Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said.

Kerala schools to reopen for Classes 1 to 9 from February 14

For one ball four set got won (15-12, 15-12, 15-9, 14-15, 15-13). The captain of Calicut Heroes Jerom Vineet was selected as the Star of the match.
