Founded in 1255, the palace itself is a captivating monument. Initially built as Florence's first public building, it soon became the residence of the Podestà, the chief city magistrates, whose numerous coats of arms still adorn the courtyard walls. From the late 1500s, the building served as the headquarters for the "Bargello," the head of the city police, and was used as a prison for several centuries thereafter.
