Agrupamento Escolas de Colmeias is a group of 17 schools, namely a comprehensive school, 8 primary schools and 8 kindergartens, all under the same management. The project will be developed by some of the students attending the upper-grades of the main school, which is called Escola Básica Integrada (EBI) de Colmeias. This comprehensive school includes 338 students. There are 19 classes and 28 children with special needs, including seven with severe disabilities, especially in the area of Autism. There are 108 staff members in total, between teachers (82) and other personnel (26 people). The School Management team (Headmaster and 3 assistant teachers) values the development of projects and supports the teachers and students' initiatives in all possible means. The school is situated in a rural area, at middle distance between Lisbon and Porto, in the centre of Portugal. The nearest city is Leiria, which is 16 kilometres away from EBI Colmeias, and the Atlantic Ocean is 30 kms away. There are many students coming from low-income families and with a poor cultural background, what makes this project even more important.

Agrupamento Escolas de Colmeias has always been an innovative institution, with high quality rates using the CAF (Common Assessment Framework) model. Thus, it has agreed on an Autonomy Contract with the Ministry of Education for several years/times, which allows the School Management team and the Pedagogical Board to make their own decisions, although a higher level of autonomy, if possible, would be beneficial to let this group of school surpass certain limits/difficulties.

All activities developed in the area of foreign languages conform to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, showing that our concern is not only based on programme contents, but also on providing the students with proficiency levels for their academic and professional career. Following this idea, our school develops the SELF Project (European Section of French Language) and information on it is included in the students’ academic register. If necessary, we also prepare intermediate students for DELF (Diploma in French Studies). Along the years there has also been a European Club (in which the students can learn about culture and languages), an English Club, a Theatre Club, an History Club and other European initiatives (such as the celebration of the European Month, …).

Most parents don’t usually get involved in school activities and there isn’t much cultural life around, apart from the high level of unemployment in this area. These are factors which reinforce the importance of projects like this one, which aims to give student new opportunities in their academic and personal lives.
