Even after the constant promises from Rex Walls to Jeannette, he never built the Glass Castle for him and his family. Even after 17 years of making the promise that they would all settle down and build it together as a family, he only ever kept drinking moving around the country. Jeannette was extremely self-sufficient because she had been forced to be so since she was 3 years old since she knew her parents would spend money on useless items or alcohol. She's worked a lot of side jobs and she even got a real job that paid really well. Amidst all the chaos of the Wall's family life, they still tried to keep a sense of order around themselves with paintings of many different scenes all over the walls and colored bottles to give the house a more colorful look. This image of the farmhouse show's what Jeannette really always wanted, she left Eric because she didn't like the fancy life of living on park avenue, or the more professional and serious man. She prefers a more rural style of living and a person who shares that with her and a less professional mannerism throughout life, but that can also bring stability rather than instability.
