The Ireland of when Edmund lived there was an unjust place where many lived in poverty and social structures deeply oppressed the majority of the population. In 1802, he set up a school for the young men who were living in poverty.

In the school Edmund opened, he was assisted by two men who he paid for their services but after a while, they had fled and could not be induced to return even after being offered a higher salary.

Ireland was under British rule and the anti-Catholic Penal Laws were in force which prevented a Catholic from owning land over a certain value. Catholics were also not permitted to own weapons of any kind. The Penal Law also prevented Catholics from attending Mass and receiving an education. These laws were relaxed at the time of Edmund's childhood and were eventually dropped in 1829.

In 1891, Pope Leo XIII released his encyclical, Rerum Novarum. It was issued at a time of immense social change in Europe, marked by the awakening of democracy, a rise in industrialisation and the influence of capitalism, and the popular appeal of communism among working people. Pope Leo was concerned about the rise of Communism, which claimed to offer workers a socio-economic and political alternative to the alliance between aristocratic privilege and the capital industrial interests. At the same time, he saw the excesses of capitalism development and the exploitation and dire poverty of workers.
There are three major themes in the encyclical:
- The Balance Between Labour and Capital
- The Common Good
- The Role of the State
Pope Leo also articulated what has come to be known as the preferential option for the poor.
