"Rule 1: Answer the alarm quickly.

3: Burn everything.

4: Report back to firehouse immediately.

5: Stand alert for other Alarms."

Why are there five rules for burning a house down? Why do they have to burn everything there?

"The women knelt among the books, touching the drenched leather and cardboard, reading the gilt titles with her fingers while her eyes accused Montag. "You can't ever have my books," she said"

Why wouldn't she give up the books? Is she hiding something? Is this going to be important to the plot?

"Montag placed his hands on the woman's elbow, "You can come with me."

"No," she said. "Thank you anyway."

"I'm counting to ten," said Beatty. "One, Two."

"Please," said Montag."

"Go on," said the woman."

"Three. Four."

"Here." Montag pulled at the women."

"The woman replied quietly, " I want to stay here."

"Five. Six."

"You can stop counting," she said. She opened the fingers of one hand slightly and in the plan of the hand was a single slender object."

Why did the woman want to die with her books? Did she see what Montag was seeing? Could she have been part of something bigger?

"An ordinary kitchen match."

The women might have burned the fire for something bigger than just the books, maybe to prove a point.

"Master Ridley," said Montag a last."

"What?" said Beatty."

"She said, 'Master Ridley.' She said some crazy thing when we came in the door. 'Play the man,' she said. 'Master Ridley.' Something, something, something."

"Mildred do you know that girl I was telling you about?"

"What girl?" Shae was almost asleep."

"The girl next door."

"What girl next door?"

"You know, the high-school girl. Clarisse, her name is."

"Oh, yes," said his wife."

"I haven't seen her for days-four days to be exact. Have you seen her?"

"No."

"I've meant to talk to you about her. Strange."

"Oh, I know the one you mean."

"I thought you would."

"Her," said Mildred in the dark room."

"What about her?"

"I meant to tell you. Forgot. Forgot."

"Tell me now. What is it?"

"I think she's gone."

"Gone?"

"Whole family moved out somewhere. But she's gone for good. I think she's dead."

How was Montag just finding out about this? Did Mildred "forget" to tell hum or did she just not want to tell him? Will Montag find out what really happened?

"What about it?"

"We burned a thousand books. We burned a woman."

"Well?"

Mildred seemed like she didn't care. Maybe she will find out Montag has books, be mortified, and tell on him.

"We burned a thousand books. We burned a woman."

"The parlor was exploding with sound."

"We burned copies of Dante and Swift and Marcus Aurelius."

It's kind of ironic that Montag burns books as his job considering he is hiding books.

"You could hear them breathing fast, the slower, then slow..."

"It's strange, I don't miss her, it's strange I don't feel much of anything," said Montag."

Montag is starting to realize that maybe he doesn't care about Mildred as much as he thought.

"Montag, falling flat, going down, saw or felt, or imagined he saw or felt the walls go dark in Millie's face, heard her screaming, because in the millionth part of time left, she saw her own face reflected there, in a mirror instead of a crystal ball, and it was such a wildly empty face, all by itself in the room, touching nothing, starved and eating of itself, that at last she recognized it as her own and looked quickly up at the ceiling as it and the entire structure of the hotel blasted down upon her, carrying her with a million pounds of brick, metal, plaster, and wood, to meet other people in the hives below, all on their quick way down to the cellar where the explosion rid itself of them in its own unreasonable way."

Montag started to realize that maybe he does care about Mildred. He is starting to remember things that he didn't before. Maybe it was from guilt?

"They leaped into the air and clutched the brass pole as if it were the last vantage point above the tidal wave passing below."

Beatty was so adamant/ excited to get to Montag's house.

"With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world..."

This is showing how important the fireman's job really is.

"It was dead but it was alive. I could see but it couldn't see."

Montag is describing the significance of the book and how beautiful they are.

"Montag looked up. Beatty never drove, but he was driving tonight, slamming the Salamander around corners, leaning forward high on the driver's throne, his massive black slicker flapping out behind so that he seemed a great black bat flying above the engine, over the brass numbers, taking the full wind."

Beatty seems so adamant about driving the truck. Was he planning something? Why does he care so much about this? Maybe he has a reason to care so much.

LIGHTS flicked on and house-doors opened all down the street, to watch the carnival set up. Montag and Beatty stared, one with dry satisfaction, the other with disbelief, at the house before them, this main ring in which torches would be juggled and fire eaten.

"Well," said Beatty, "now you did it. Old Montag wanted to fly near the sun and now that he's burnt his damn wings, he wonders why. Didn't I hint enough when I sent the Hound around your place?"

Montag's face was entirely numb and featureless; he felt his head turn like a stone carving to the dark place next door, set in its bright borders of flowers."

Was Beatty planning this for a while? Why would he burn Montag's house? Maybe he had enough of Montag's "silliness".

"and he remembered thinking then that if she died, he would certain he wouldn't cry. For it would be the dying of an unknown, a street face, a newspaper image, and it was suddenly so very wrong that he begun to cry, not at death but at the thought of not crying at death."

This quote from the book is Montag telling how he truly feels about Mildred.
