State-sponsored espionage; widespread censorship; political persecution; usage of digital personal information to influence electoral outcomes and propaganda (also linked to fake news regarding political figures and emerging leaders). The usage of online platforms to restrict the information users are receiving and publishing and imposing state-sponsored propaganda that seeks to influence "democratic" processes pose a direct threat to the relationship state-citizen, which is supposed to be accountable and transparent in democratic societies, limiting human freedom.

While I'm pretty terrified by what the biggest social platforms know about my day-to-day life, I feel that the biggest threat cyber-security and cyber-space in general poses is the threat to the liberal democratic society as we know it.
Wouldn't it be for the (dis)informational campaigns whose scale is very hardly measurable, UK would probably remain in the UK, Trump might not be the US President and a number of other populist entities would not make it to national parliaments.

Countries like Russia (and the US to some extent) have already a headstart. It's going to be difficult to find a adequate response.
