Maya Angelou's words have always inspired me. Ebony Green's use of the butterfly expression is insightful. I have always said that my teaching philosophy is a quotation from Maya Angelou: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget would you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."

I can relate
There were so many things Ms. Green said that I understand and relate to. I have tried to get students to see the potential they have that I see, but it is often so hard because they haven’t experienced enough success that gives them a glimpse of what potential looks like for them. I have had the experience she had with one of her students and I felt the same awe and validation she felt. I know that education is reciprocal and I have had teachers in my life that have motivated me to keep moving forward. I only hope I am living up to their example.

I liked the concept that education is reciprocal. Sometimes I am the teacher and sometimes I am the student. I like to encourage my students to tell me ways they've learned in the past to remember or understand a concept. A lot of times the method they shared is easier for their fellow classmates to understand than what I taught.

Education is reciprocal, it is a relationship that you build, trust that is shared, and you learn from each other with all that you share. When the student, at any age, comes in for a hug because you have touched their life so much, it is a reminder of the power of that relationship. And that hug gives power to both participants. This is true of the 6 year old, as it is true of the college student on the last day of classes as they walk out the door.

I can relate to and completely agree that education is reciprocal. Many times my students and their life experiences are the most wonderful lessons that teach me and inspire me. I make it a point to let my students know and feel respected and honored in my classroom simply because they are present and they are who they are. My students and I make each other better people.
