There are so many types of families. Each family is unique in many ways. Having different gender parents, parents from different countries, whole families from different countries. So many learning experiences can be had just celebrating each child’s family. One great way is to have a library of books that talk about how we are different yet the same. One book called ALL HAIR BEST by Elizabeth Stoops, talks about how we all have different hair. It creates conversations about how beautiful we all are. Another book that discusses diversity is THE FAMILY BOOK by Todd Parr. This book talks about how everyone’s family is different and unique. An activity that can be done after reading this story is to have each child draw a picture of everyone in their family.

Positive and confident self identities

I LIKE MYSELF by Karen Beaumont and illustrated by David Catrow. Publisher: Clarion Books ( October 16, 2018).

This is a great book that encourages children to love themselves. It teaches the importance of loving each part of oneself, inside and out. It teaches children positive self image, self esteem, confidence, and identity. Children will learn to love however they look despite having messy hair or even monkey breath!

The Not So Friendly Friend is a book that teaches children how to gently yet firmly stand up to others who are not kind to them. It teaches children it is important to set up boundaries with others in order to have healthy relationships. The book teaches children tools to foster their well being and social confidence.

This wonderful story teaches the importance of accepting differences as our differences are what makes us special . It discusses how discrimination is harmful in an age appropriate way that encourages tolerance and differences.

This resource offers several strategies that will help create an anti biased environment. They suggest ways to incorporate messages of affirmation, fairness and empowerment in your lesson planning and activities. One powerful way they suggest is to incorporate books that children can relate to. One such book is Barefoot books: Children of the world by Tessa Strickland and Katie DePalma, illustrated by David Dean, published by Barefoot Books ( October 1,2018). This is a story that shows children from around the world, talking about how we all look and sound different yet are still the same. Using resources like these books helps educators to teach and explain the importance of acceptance.

EMPATHETIC INTERACTIONS

Empathetic interactions between young children are the interactions that they have that help them understand and relate to each other. These are the interactions that help develop empathy, problem solving skills and improved communication. The website Zero To Three has great suggestions on activities that can help young children to develop empathy. They suggest talking to your children about their feelings, which validates their emotions. But also to talk about others feelings, discuss how something might have made another person feel. Reading books about feelings helps open the conversation with children about how situations might make everyone feel. It’s never to early to start these conversations, the sooner the better.

UNDERSTANDING DISABILITIES

A child having a disability can be a major source of stress for families. They often feel that they are alone and have no support for their child but also for themselves. The IDEA act provides resources about early learning, support groups for specific groups and information on their rights and children’s rights. Families can use the website to find their home states page and can find resources and information for their specific needs.

GENDER BIAS

It is important for educators to create gender inclusive classrooms that promote anti biased environments. NAEYC has several resources on how to help teachers create these environments. One great article, Tate and the Pink Coat: Exploring Gender and Enacting Anti Bias Principles, discusses how to create safe space that promotes safety, equity, and respect.
