As the authors of the text state, "conflict is a struggle that occurs when individuals, interdpendent with others, perceive that those others are interfering with their goal attainment" (Friend et al 2017). Conflict is likely to happen in today's schools as the requirements for collaboration among professionals and the community have been increased. Educational professionals are likely to disagree on teaching methods, schedules, curriculum and many more items.

Susan Van Amburgh, elementary resource room paraprofessional, reports the following as causes of conflict in a school setting:

Differences in educational background. Susan used classroom management as an example. She states, "The ones who have behavioral backgrounds see a situation differently (antecedent/motivation) than those with an academic background (student engagement). "

Another cause of conflict can come from the difference in levels of education. She spoke to people that are highly educated not trusting the support staff that has on the job experience with students.

There are several styles to conflict resolution.

Accommodating: In this style people tend to set aside personal needs to insure that the needs of others are met.

Avoiding: This characterized by ignoring the problem at hand.

Competing: This is associated with the use of power or force. Typically, the goal is winning despite possible negative outcomes

Compromising: This style is characterized by both sides giving up some of their ideas to find the middle ground.

Consensus through Collaboration: Typically, this is the most satisfying approach to resolution. The idea is that all members of the conflict come to a resolution in agreement

(Friend et al 2017).

As a professional, it is important to keep in mind your own perspective and how it is influenced by culture. Each member of a team comes from a different background; it is essential to try and be understanding of their cultures as well. This can make the resolution process more challenging, as people may have different styles of communication, or they might perceive different resolution strategies to be unnecessary. For example, a person might perceive a formal meeting as a waste of time if the problem can be solved with a quick conversation.

Another challenge might be the tendency to resist change. Many times, people become comfortable with the way problems are solved, and they may not feel comfortable with a new process. It can seem intimidating and scary for people who have not experienced the method of problem solving.
(Friend et al 2017).
