Sad, lost emotion. The narrator of this poem is going through a rough time with their mother having an operation, and their grandma treating them like they're worthless. I can imagine the grandmother gripping their wrist and swinging them into the chair. I would not want to be this character.

The grandma seems to be old, cranky, and strict. It even states how she is strict and spanks and gives the kids time outs. The kid seems to be afraid of him and I would hate to have that grandmother. Then the kid lies to the grandmother about not asking a nurse at school and says what to do, like his mom would but switches some things around because he doesn't want some thing to burn him. He is lying for himself, but in that situation I would probably lie to.
