Beside the Pindos Mountains, in the western region of Thessaly, these unique and enormous columns of rock rise from the ground. But their unusual form is not easy to explain geologically. They are not volcanic plugs of hard igneous rock typical elsewhere, but the rocks are composed of a mixture of sandstone and conglomerate.
The conglomerate was formed of deposits
of stone, sand, and mud from streams
flowing into a delta at the edge of a lake, over millions of years. About 60 million years ago during the Paleogene period a series of earth movements pushed the seabed upward, creating a high plateau and causing many vertical fault lines in the thick layer of sandstone. The huge rock pillars were then formed by weathering by water, wind, and extremes of temperature on the vertical faults. It is unusual that this conglomerate formation and type of weathering are confined to a relatively localised area within the surrounding mountain formation. The complex is referred to an exhumed continental remnant of Pandean association.

Τhanos

Castles and walls, old mansions, narrow cobbled streets, churches, Byzantine icons give the impression of a city untouched by time. A small island joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. Only a narrow strip of land, a bridge, connects Monemvasia to the mainland, which looks like a floating fortress. It is also called the "Gibraltar of the East", because it looks like the Rock of Gibraltar in miniature.

Mihaela

In the northern part of the city, between a green pine forest and the sea, the castle of Mytilene is built. It is kept in fairly good condition and is one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean region. Its construction and strengthening took place in various periods of time. It is likely that it was built in the Byzantine era during the time of Justinian. When Frangiskos Gatelouzos became the ruler of the island, he renovated it and thus it became one of the most impregnable and powerful castles. Inside it was also his palace, called the "Queen's Tower". In the castle grounds there is also a reservoir made of waterproof material. Beneath the castle there are long galleries, where women and children gathered during the war. Its walls are kept in good condition and are examples of excellent fortified architecture.

Kalina

They were restored on a global basis in 1894 in honor of the ideal of peaceful international contention for excellence.
