Alcohol potentially caused mental illnesses, crime, the breakup of families, and the faster rate of death. In the late 1820's, the Temperance Movement was started. The Temperance Movement was a public campaign against the sale or drinking of alcohol. People wanted the abstinence of alcohol or less availability to those who drank it continuously. By 1850, Maine forbade the sale of alcohol and other states shortly with similar legislation. The abolitionists movement began in the revolutionary era, in response to unfair treatment of slaves. Although slavery ended in the north, the south continued to slave African-Americans. Both black and whites were involved in this case.
