Salem Massachusetts was founded in 1842 and the American military originated there. The city is known for the Salem witch trials which took place in 1692. In present day, over half a million people visit due to the witch trials from centuries ago. On halloween night, almost 250,000 people visit downtown Salem. Although the history is unfortunate, many people find visiting a spiritual experience.

Witch hunts originated in 1428 in Europe and began in the Americas in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. Over 200 people were accused of witchcraft and about 20 were executed. Many believe people were afraid of witches at that time because in that period they were very religious and they were all alone in the woods so they had a lot to fear which eventually led to hysteria. Undiagnosed mental illness was also a factor. For a person to be executed or accused for being a witch 3 things were needed; a confession, 2 eyewitnesses and spectral evidence. They killed the witched by hanging or beheading them first, but their bodies were typically incinerated afterwards to protect against postmortem sorcery. Other condemned witches that were still alive when they faced the flames, and were left to endure an excruciating death by burning and inhalation of toxic fumes.

The Salem Witch Trials occurred in Salem Massachusetts during colonial times. These witch trials began in 1692 when a group of young girls in Salem claimed to be possessed by the devil and they accused women that were local of witchcraft. During this period, religion was a significant part of society. The devil was a common fear throughout the people. Salem was also located near the woods, which set an eerie tone in their environment. This, along with the poor status of women during this time, led to the Salem Witch Trials. To accuse one as a witch, there must be two eyewitnesses, an outburst of some kind by the accused, and of course an accusation. If convicted, a witch could be hanged, burned, stoned, and more.

The rhetorical appeals are ethos, pathos, and logos. Logos appeals to the more logical side of an argument, while pathos appeals to the more emotional side. Ethos appeals to credibility and makes it believable. In the movie, the pathos was the fear of people associating with the devil and witchcraft. An example of ethos would be using sophisticated words and adding his own experiences to show that he knows what he is talking about. An example of logos would be the revered using his books to back up an argument and make the townspeople believe people who "acted a certain way" was associating with the devil.

Appealing to Pity is using emotions instead of facts to win an argument. It distracts the audience and sways their point of view.
Ex: Someone accused of a crime using a cane or walker to appear more feeble in front of a jury. The appearance of disability isn't an argument of the case, but it's intended to sway the jury's opinion anyway.

Arthur Miller was an activist who drew attention to controversial political and social issues during his time. He rejected both socialism and fascism as too rigid and extremist. He was also a playwright for The Crucible. In 1956, Miller was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Still, he refused to give up the names' of writers he had previously seen at a convention for Communist writers. Due to the political tension at the time he was convicted of contempt and won. The red scare is based on an ungovernable emotional excess threat posed by Communists in the U.S. during the Cold War. This later affected the U.S. government and society. There were two red scares one during WW1 and another during WW2. McCarthyism was the practice of accusing government officials without having evidence. The connection is that Miller was charged with McCarthyism during the Red Scare. Due to the Red Scare, it was wanted from officials that Miller fess up, but he was convicted of unapproved allegations(McCarthyism).
