International Aid Programs

Poverty in Central America is at its lowest level in 30 years due to the help from foreign governments, American agencies such as USAID, and other private donor organizations. USAID works to increase jobs in Central America, create safe urban space, educate youth, strengthen justice systems, and help countries protect their natural resources. The organization has created prosperity in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, and Haiti. The citizens of these countries obviously benefit from this aid, but some people argue that in the long run, international aid only worsens inequality and poverty. Congress has continually funded many governments in Central America that have many human rights violations on their records, and experts believe that these extra funds might just sustain their corruption.

Potential Solutions

One solution that I could think of to combat the corruption and human rights violations of the governments in Central America while still combating poverty is to directly work with the citizens of those countries, such as providing education and teaching life skills, while at the same time work with the governments to oust tyrannical leaders and elect good leaders. We could help to instill good economies and legitimate laws and law enforcement while at the same time mediate central american countries so they can work together to tackle poverty and human rights violations.

How Can These Make an Impact?

If it all went ideally and all the governments became legitimate with stable economies, then I believe it would have a very good impact on the poverty of Central America. They would continue to drop and the region would no longer be known for its third world countries but for its prosperous and booming economies and its countries with happy citizens. I hope to live long enough to see that happen one day.
