In the 1860s, the Midland Railway decided to establish a London terminus to rival other major railway companies. George Gilbert Scott designed the station by combining functionality with aestheticism and embraced a Gothic style. He made a unique choice of using red brick and terracotta and mixed elements of Gothic and Renaissance influences. The Midland Hotel was designed to be a luxurious accommodation for travelers arriving in London.

The building was designed by British architect F. W. Stevens that blends themes deriving from Indian traditional architecture and Victorian Gothic revival. This terminus became the symbol of Bombay as the Gothic city and the major international Mercantile port of India. It is the meeting of two cultures as British architects worked with Indian craftsman to include Indian architectural tradition and idioms, and as a result creating a new style unique to Bombay. The street’s architectural details like coquina walls, iron balconies, and brick paving reveal its European influence and local craftsmanship that have endured for centuries. In the 1930s, Aviles became the city’s first formal arts district. Today this street is a hot spot for tourism where visitors can get a glimpse of what the Spanish colonial days were like through the architecture itself.

https://www.trolleytours.com/st-augustine/aviles-street

Flagler popularized St. Augustine as a vacation destination for the rich with his many luxurious hotels, which inspired the build of many Spanish Revival style homes. The socialite who owned this house begged Flagler to sketch out an idea, and it is interesting to see his designs translate from very decorative hotels to a smaller scale "cozy" yet classy home. With a Spanish Revival exterior and a pure Victorian interior, the home blends St. Augustine’s ancient past with its renaissance. Nothing is wasted and design is in every detail.

https://www.oldhouses.com/countesshouse

Mizner had ambitious plans for the “Dream City of the Western World” that included very high end hotels and resorts. His preference for Mediterranean Revival style lives today in the balconies, arched windows, wrought-iron details and barrel-roof tiles that are still on display. Mizner was no stranger to decorative touches, long stained glass windows provided a nod to Old World Europe.

https://www.thebocaraton.com/blog/architectural-digest/

The expansive prayer hall's significance is magnified by its repeated geometry. It is built with recycled ancient Roman columns from which sprout a striking combination of two-tiered, symmetrical arches, formed of stone and red brick.

https://smarthistory.org/the-great-mosque-of-cordoba/

Plaza de España, Seville, Spain (1928)

This plaza was built because of the Ibero-american Exhibition held in Seville, 1929. Created by Aníbal González, he mixed the common Renaissance style with typical elements from the city: exposed brick, ceramics and wrought iron. The floor plan is semicircular and dominated by 2 towers, one on each side of the enclosed area, which frame the central building.

https://www.spain.info/en/places-of-interest/plaza-espana-sevilla/

Jules Frere House, Fort Pierce, Florida (1931)

Jules Frere was a Fort Pierce merchant and owner of Sunrise Lumber Company. He built the original square, flat-roofed structure in 1931. It is locally significant as one of the best examples of the Spanish Colonial Revival style in Fort Pierce. The cathedral has leaded stained glass in the spine of the ceiling and detailed Florida themed leaded stained glass in the doors. There is a functional wood-burning fireplace in this house which is not common in Florida, but I feel it is unique to this house because of the owners running a lumber company. Around 1940 it was sold to the McDonald family for $4,800.00, but over the years the home changed ownership.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Frere_House

Designed by Henry Flagler, he had built this palace as a winter playground for America’s richest travelers, planting it right off the main line of his Florida East Coast Railway. The size of the structure was immense, At one point the hotel was reputed to be the largest wooden structure in the world. The Royal Poinciana had over 3 miles of hallways. To keep the sights, sounds, and smells of Palm Beach as clean as possible, the designers limited the presence of the railroad and automobiles. The Royal Poinciana Hotel closed in 1934 due to a hurricane and the Great Depression.

https://www.floridamemory.com/items/show/295227

Mar-a-Lago spans 126 rooms and 62,500 square feet built on 17 acres of land. Since 1985, it has been owned by Donald Trump. Mar-a-Lago was built for the businesswoman and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post between 1924 and 1927, during the Florida land boom. Mar-a-Lago was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1980 for exemplifying "the baronial way of life of the wealthy who built mansions in Florida during the Florida land boom of the 1920s".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mar-a-Lago

the 2020 Parade of Homes featured 19 homes in 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival style. Craig Huffman, Associate Professor of Architecture at Florida A&M University, expert on historical design in Northern Florida, stated "Spanish architecture is part of our common heritage as Floridians, and this design pays homage to our past while moving the ball forward for residential architecture in the region." The building uses real Spanish clay tile roofing, authentic stucco exterior walls, expansive archways, and beamed ceilings using timber from trees that once stood on the lot.

https://www.tallahassee.com/story/life/home-garden/2020/06/11/spanish-colonial-makes-comeback-2020-tallahassee-parade-homes/5328667002/
