Literary Circles are group reading sessions in which your group reads certain parts of the book and then discusses what has happened. Each member should have a chance to share their reflection.

Each reading session will involve a task to complete. It is a group effort that requires a lot of collaboration, one of our key school values.

The task should be completed as a team, with one person scribing the responses on the padlet after team discussion.

Each circle (or group) will report back to the class on what has happened in their chapter/excerpt so that the class can better understand the text. The 'reporter' must be a different person to the scribe.

Each person will then complete a summary of their own.

Literary Circles with a ghost story can be like solving a big puzzle!

1. Why is Beth’s father so upset?
2. What did Aunty Viv and Aunty June mean when they told Beth she’d see her mother again ‘on another side’? Did Beth believe them?
3. What do you think Beth’s Grandpa Jim meant when he said “Life doesn’t move through time, Bethie. Times moves through life”?
4. When Beth describes her father as having “a lost expression [she’d] come to hate”, what do you think that tells us about Beth’s feeling towards her dad’s grief?
5. In the final paragraph of the extract, describe Beth’s protectiveness over her father.

Sample Summary
Beth's father is so upset because he has lost his daughter, Beth, in a car accident. He is struggling to come to terms with the loss and 'stuck in grief' over it. Beth is protective over her father and she describes him as having a 'lost expression [she'd] come to hate.' meaning that she is effected by the pain he is feeling. He can still see her as a ghost - which is a sign of both of them not being ready to let go. She believes she must watch over him while he heals and so it doesn't become too much for him. Beth's Aunties talk of her seeing her mother 'on another side' in the after life (as her mother died years earlier. Although Beth hadn't seen her yet, she knew she would (when she left her dad). When Beth’s Grandpa Jim said “Life doesn’t move through time, Bethie. Times moves through life”, he means that life happens and you have to go with whatever will be.

Instead of responding to the questions from Michael, she wants to talk about things her way because she needs to get it all of her chest now that she is trusting enough to tell someone. She's had to do whatever she was told for far too long in the 'beneath place'.

Explain the effect of this trauma on Isobel using the quote in your answer.
5. What has happened to the other girls who were here?
6. She says her connections are broken and she is shattered. She is spoken to by her mother, what impact does this have on Catching?

Sample summary
Catching is taken by the Fetchers and treated like property. They go through tunnels and she is dropped on the floor. The Feed arrives, a white, large man who has no respect for Catching as she is Indigenous. She is grabbed and abused by The Feed. She says "My eyes leak hot tears. My throat rips itself apart with screams I can't scream." This trauma leaves her terrified. The pain she experiences and the hurt that she has felt is too much to bear. Crow informs her that all of the other girls who were here were treated like this and they are all now dead. Catching says her connections are broken and she is shattered. The spirit of her mother speaks to her and Catching says she 'can endure' and get through it with the help of remembering the strength of her ancestors.

1. Isobel talks about her world being drained of colour. Why is it lacking colour?

Maybe because the world is colourless (i read this book a long time ago about the indigenous world before it had colour and something bled and all birds got colours only crows didn’t)

2. Isobel says "My heart is hollow". What do you think it is that she is missing? (Which emotion?)

Isobel is missing something. Since the text says her heart is hollow it means there is a hole or it is empty. She feels like her heart is empty because she just lost her mum. Her mum was someone Isobel loved a lot so she could feel empty now that that part of her life was gone. I think she may have also been the only member of her family left with her so her mum would've taken up more of her heart.

3. How does Isobel describe the 2 figures on the cliff?
As Isobel notices the figures on the cliff, she first depicts and points out their wings as “leathrey” and “grey”, along with the robes and masks each creature wore as something “which hides their head and bodies”. She then further describes them as “a wrongness” which “makes the hairs on the back of [her] neck prickle”. Along with that, as she first spots them, she understands that as the creatures wear clothing that helps them blend in, however, she knows that “they can't be human.” Which stimulates the idea of the creatures being dangerous, which we then find out was correct.

4. Catching is described as having colour and being a 'little rainbow'. The fetchers seem to take an interest in this. Why do you think Isobel is seen to be beautiful?

Because Isobel is unique and they probably rarely see colours in a colourless world. Because she lost her mother, she feels like that colour has been sucked out of her world, now it is filled with sorrow, a small rainbow may be a bit of happiness in her world.

5. The passage ends with her saying she has been 'fetched' . What do you think this means?

The passage ending with “I’m fetched” symbolises how Isobel got taken by the “fetchers”. The fetchers are described as non-human beings that fetch* things and give it to him. The he-who-is-First is the bigger, more frightening out of the pair, the he-who-is-Second is just his partner in finding and collecting things. When Teller has an interesting conversation with the Fetchers, they notice that Teller is colourful, bright, and describe her as a rainbow. Teller begins to have a sick feeling in her stomach, when First says “We’ll fetch you”, Teller screams with an indescribable feeling of fright. The last sentence, “I’m fetched” indicates that Teller has been caught by First and Second, and being brought to a place that she is unfamiliar with.

Chapter Summary: The other Place (36-46) Isobel talks about her world being drained of colour.

1. What was the suspected cause of the fire?

The suspected cause of the fire was an electrical fault, which was presumed to be accidental.

2. Why was no one overcome with grief about the fire?

No one was overcome with grief because all of the children from the fire were reported to be alive. Another reason is that no one there is close to any one of the suspected dead people shown when Beth tried to obtain some clues from people around.

3. Describe Catching's reaction to Michael.

Catching's reaction to Michael was dismissive, unimpressed and sarcastic.

4. When Michael tells Catching that he is there to listen, what is her reply?

Catching was doubtful when Michael said that he was there to listen for whatever story she had to tell. After a while, she got comfortable and opened up to Michael more. Thus, she began telling him the atrocious stories, an allegory of her experiences, that a regular person would be skeptical of.

5. Isobel is thinking about something. How does that make her feel? Provide a quote that supports your view.

It is likely that Isobel is capable of seeing Beth. In chapter 3, page 25, Beth suspects that ‘[Isobel] looked at [her]’, though she rejected the thought, as she proposed a possible explanation that no one other than her dad can see her as a ghost. This quote foreshadows Isobel's capability of seeing spirits.

Summary:

The third chapter of the book “Catching Teller Crow” (The Witness) continues to progress along the plot as Beth and her dad come to a hospital to visit the witness of the case Micheal is currently investigating. They meet a white (pale) girl in the corridor whose surname was Catching, she explained that she is actually Aboriginal and that her great-great-grandma was good at catching cattle, and thus got the surname Catching from the slave owner. Michael then tried to gather clues by asking Catching about if she saw what happened, however Catching was reserved about giving much information about the mystery since she believed that he wouldn’t believe it. As Michael assured her his patience, she unveiled her experiences as an allegory. This shows that Isobel is uncomfortable and sensitive with her past experiences, which may have caused trauma. This chapter also reveals that Isobel may be capable of seeing Beth as a spirit, as Isobel looked in Beth’s direction in the chapter. Beth’s suspicion of her gaze foreshadows her capabilities of seeing deceased individuals as ghosts.

1. What was Beth's reaction to the crow? Beth thinks that the crow is looking at her just as if it could sense her existence.

She thought that the crow might’ve flown away because she waved at it, but she remembered something her science teacher taught her, “correlation does not imply causation”.

2. What was the importance of Beth looking after her father? The importance of Beth looking after her father was to make sure that her dad will keep living as her dad had been left behind twice by Beth and her mother which makes her dad depressed and upset about it so now is her turn to look after her dad.

3. Describe the children in the photo that Michael was looking at.

It was described that their smiles were forced and they did not enjoy being there. This was illustrated when Beth expressed that ‘none of them were smiling, at least not properly… their mouths were turned up but it didn’t reach their eyes’.

4. Who funded the Children's Home?

Alexander Sholt. He was the one that set up the foundation that funds the home. He was also the one who donated the house. His family was the ones that owned the house before.

5. What were the roles of Nurse Flint and Director Cavanagh?

The role of nurse flint is to take care of the kids and make sure that they are in good health both mentally and physically making sure that they have the right food and nutrition. And the director runs classes and managed the home.

6. What was interesting about the children and the fire?

The children were all different ages and races to each other living in a family house. The family house was far from all of their families and all the children were taken to the city for child services after the fire. There was also a commotion about what happened to Nurse flint during the fire or after saying that she died before the fire or was unconscious, Nurse flint took care of the kids nutrition, first aid, general health and wellbeing of the kids.

7. Who was found walking the land near the home?

There was a girl who was walking around the river near the home.

Summary:

Beth and her father take a trip to the outskirts of town to visit the remains of the children's home. While they are there, Beth notices a crow sitting on the ruins. She gives a wave to the crow, and it suddenly takes flight. Beth begins to wonder whether her wave might have been the reason the crow flew away. Her thoughts wander to something her science teacher once said, emphasising that "correlation does not imply causation." However, her dad offers a different perspective, explaining that in many cases, when two events occur in sequence, detectives often assume that the first event caused the second, unless evidence proves otherwise.

Micheal Teller has been grieving after his daughter’s death and was given a “simple” investigation for a fire that happened at a children’s home. Beth, his daughter, had died in a car accident involving her Aunty Viv, who fortunately remained alive but still injured. Because of this, Beth’s dad believes Aunty Viv holds some responsibility for Beth’s death and shuts her out. Continuing with their investigation, with only 1 corpse found and the rest of the children involved in the “accident” gone, Beth’s suspicion grows on what might have really happened in the fire. Yet, Dad remains flat but slowly begins to think of possibilities leading to the incident. Micheal then realizes there is a witness of the accident and they both go to talk to them.

Explain what we learn about Oscar Sholt and his fear of the apocalypse.

We learn that Oscar Sholt has a crippling fear for the apocalypse as he truly believes the end of the world is nigh. Thus, he used a large amount of money for ridiculous investments and supplies just in case the end really does arrive.

2. This leads to a suspicion that Alexander Sholt may have been involved in what?

Beth and Michael suspect that Alexander Sholt may have been involved in illegal activity to earn money, as the Sholt family were in an economical crisis back then.

3. What do we find out about Allie's friend Sarah?

Disappeared a week before her 15th birthday, apparently 20 years 7 months 6 days (according to what Allie says). The chapter ends with another development. What happens?

Allie reports to Michael that two more dead bodies have been found, both stabbed.

Summary:

This chapter continues with the investigation, in an attempt to track down the missing owner of the children's house, Alexander Sholt. The chapter reveals the backstory of a character called Sarah, an old friend of Allie, which suspiciously disappeared 20 years ago. Allie also consults information about the Sholt family, where Oscar Sholt, Alexander’s grandfather, had caused an economical crisis in the family, due to his ridiculous beliefs. This reinforces Beth and Michael’s beliefs that Alexander had participated in illegal activities to achieve the title as the richest in the town. The Teller’s also realise, as they arrive at Alexander Sholt’s house, that its features completely contrasts Derek's description. At the door, they meet with Alex’s father, Charles, who has impatiently explained that Alexander had left a day ago. In doubt, Beth investigates the house in her ghost form, to find nothing but a broken window with strands of black hair in the second storey of the house. Beth and her dad immediately relate the black hair to Director Cavanagh, which they suspect to have broken into the house. As they depart, Allie reports that there have been two more bodies found, both stabbed.

ACTIVITIES

1. Beth describes Catching's gaze as being 'so deep, like there was no end to the things she'd seen.' What does this mean?

The description that Beth gives implies that her eyes are soulless, hinted by catching’s backstory being traumatic for her and giving her eyes a soulless like gaze. The phrase also implies that she has had some traumatic experiences in her life.

2. What do we discover about the fire and those involved?

We discover that Martin Flint, the nurse, had not actually died in the fire. Instead, they were stabbed with an “unusual weapon”. We also learn that both the nurse and the director had been taking money out of the company, but Beth's dad suspects it wasnt embezzlement, but instead they were selling something instead.

3. How does Beth describe her connection with Catching?

Her connection with Catching is best described as an unusual relationship between the two people. When Beth first found out that catching can see her, she was quite shocked and stunned, but more information is revealed when she opens up about the story and gets to know the two better. She even considered Catching her friend, saying “I had to admit that I liked having a connection that was mine alone. It was almost as if I had a friend.” This quote challenges the idea that catching and Beth are getting closer, with a common link to the living world, that someone else is finally acknowledging her existence other than her father.

4. Describe Beth's impression of Derek Bell. Use two quotes to support this view.

Beth first thinks that Derek Bell could be a “dastardly criminal mastermind” but after talking to her dad she thinks differently, that he is just a “weaselly and incompetent official”. “He cast another anxious glance around”, this shows that he’s scared of something, also that he makes his second-in-command, Allison Hartley, to take Dad to the Sholts’ place. This could mean he’s hiding something and doesn’t want Dad to find out.

They were Director Cavanagh and Nurse Flint and they weren’t killed near the fence as there wasn't enough blood to prove that they were killed at that place. This also means the “nurse” who died in the fire wasn’t nurse Flint himself.

2. Why do you think Michael sends for a team of officer's from the city?

Because Michael wanted a police squad that didn’t report to Derek Bell.

3. Beth mentions that the way the children were treating in the home was 'not right'. Michael learns that the murders didn't take place there. Beth questions the unidentified body's identity and the possibility of the victims' ghosts appearing but dismisses the notion. A concerning call prompts Michael to bring in more police, suspecting that Derek is withholding information. Beth suggests revisiting the children from the home, but Michael doubts their cooperation, as they appear strangely unconcerned. Isobel says she is turning into Crow. What does she mean?

Isobel is losing her colours and turning grey. This phrase likely represents that Isobel Catching is slowly losing her pride. Losing colour and turning grey could also mean the loss of emotion and hope. Isobel compares turning grey to being ‘dead inside’ which shows that losing colour means losing sanity and becoming mentally paralysed, which removes all her emotions and prevents her from ‘feeling’.

3. This chapter continues to unveil Isobel’s traumatic experiences with focus on her ‘losing colour’. Isobel describes herself ‘turning grey’ like Crow, losing her emotion and hope, as a result of being assaulted by the Feeds. However, Catching regains her mental strength by reciting the names of her ancestors to endure the pain, and refuses to Crow’s suggestion to become a ‘dead girl’.

ACTIVITIES

1. Michael tells Catching that he can protect her and her friend. What is her reply?

When Michael told Catching that he could protect her friend and herself, Catching replied to him hesitantly. Catching’s decision to reject Michael’s request to protect her and her friend puts Michael in a fearful position that anything could happen to both of them. When Michael asks Catching if there are any other things that she needs or would like to tell him, Catching quickly dives her head into her pillow; this indicates that she is starting to be traumatised by the conversation.

2. Catching uses her anger and sadness to tell Beth that she needs to move on. What

do you think Beth is starting to realise? Find a quote in the last paragraph on page 125 to support this.

She is starting to realise that she is one of the reasons her dad is still upset. Because she is still here, her dad is stuck in time. “I’d been focused on getting dad back to who he’d been before I died. Now I was thinking I should have been helping him go on to become a person who knew how to live in a world where I wasn’t alive.” - page 125. This quote shows how Beth is starting to realise that her dad needs to move on. On page 129 Beth expects her dad to be crying but he wasn’t. This shows the character change of her dad as we saw at the beginning of the book that he would mostly be crying most of the time. Her dad is slowly moving on but is most likely still stuck because of Beth.

3. Why does Catching only want to 'be heard'?

Beth didn’t really believe it at first but she realised that “[catching] obviously thought she could look after herself.” This meant that she was probably more used to working alone. There is also no way to provide support to catching because there is no use in changing events that have already happened.

4. I took all of Beth's energy not to cross over. Why was she fighting leaving her Dad?

Throughout the beginning of the novel, Beth’s goal with her father was for him “to reconnect with the world”, which is why she wanted the case to be interesting so he could have something to focus on instead of becoming overwhelmed with grief. As earlier stated, her fathers character in the beginning was frequently crying, which influenced her decisions when it came to staying around her father.

Beth’s dad tries to tell her that he can save her and her friend, and Beth responds with a cold “trying to save me? Too late.” Implying that she perhaps doesn’t need saving.

ACTIVITIES

1. How does Beth feel at the beginning of this chapter?

She was sad because she thought about herself being stuck in this form forever but she wanted to be free.

2. Why did Sarah's disappearance not get much attention?

It’s because Gerry Bell failed to do what a detective should’ve done to Sarah’s case because she was Aboriginal. There was a quote in the text where Michael mentions if it was a white girl that was missing, everyone’s attention would be on the lookout for that missing girl, in Sarah’s case however, it is implied because she is aboriginal, no one really cares as much.

3. What was Michael's view on injustice and bad people being enabled by others?

He took most injustices personally, especially the ones relating to Aboriginal people. Growing up in his father’s town had taught him that one person with power could do bad things, but it took lots of people to let those bad things continue.

4. Michael breaks down about the loss of Beth in this chapter, how does he feel about her loss?

When Michael breaks down about the loss of Beth, it is revealed that Michael still feels regret as he was unable to take care of his child. And as he sees Beth’s cousins, he feels

regret on how he was unable to protect his child.

5. What happened to Derek Bell?

Derek was murdered in his own house and dad told Allie to go back to the station because he thinks the murder is still around.

1. What does Catching reveal is 100 paces to the West?

Catching reveals that the place she had been imprisoned was 100 paces to the West of the children’s home.

2. Catching gains a lightness after being heard. Why?

Catching gains a lightness after being heard as the burdens of her traumatic experiences are relieved as she confides them to Beth and Michael.

3. What had Oscar Sholt built?

Oscar Sholt had built a bunker in fear of the apocalypse, a fantasy of his absurd beliefs of doom’s day.

Summary:

“The End”, it’s name definitely fits its purpose of wrapping everything up and filling up the holes of mystery from past chapters, under Isobel’s tips, Dad and Allie find a bunker 100 paces west from the children’s home. Here, Beth finds out that Catching wasn’t lying and that her “stories” are depicting reality in an abstract way. As dad and Allie went down the bunker, Beth sat by the rivers, but just a while later, she found a pair of glasses on the ground that told her that Catching’s story was true from the description that the feed had eyes of mirror. They found out that Sholt was the one in the fire, and estimated that he was stabbed because there is a conflict between him and Derek Bell.

Does he appear tough?

He transforms from a monster into a nervous man who no longer has mirrors for eyes because he’s lost his glasses.

The Catching summary

In the Shadows Crow chuckles at herself as she repeats the lies she used to think about her own helplessness. Crow's way of eliminating greyness is similar to Catching's, her's requires her to recognize and combat the emotion that her grey reflects. Finding a grey that stands for dread, she remembers a moment when she confronted a bully at school and uses that courage to erase the grey. She then visualises herself and Crow together on a beach in the future, and she uses that happy thought to cover up a grey patch of sadness. Catching measures "the distance between who we are and who we're turning into" rather than clock time, so she has no idea of how long this process will take.

The Escape summary

Crow, who has brown complexion, black hair, and brown eyes, pushes First over and destroys Second's mask, exposing his blank face, as the Fetchers approach Catching's room. The faceless emptiness below cries for First's mask to return as Catching tears it off. The girls then bolt from the room, turning to face the Feed as it comes down the hallway with "mirror-eyes." Even when the final grey portion of Catching wants to run, she refuses and fixes her gaze on the Feed, calling the grey "shame." She informs him that although her colours belong to her, the grey humiliation belongs to him, and she is proud of herself for "surviving" him. Her final fragment of grey disappears.
